We're in the endgame now. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is poised to be a milestone for the Nintendo Switch, but unfortunately, it might be a tragic one. Talk about putting "tears" in the title.

While it might seem like only yesterday we first booted up the Nintendo Switch and paraglided our way around Hyrule for Breath of the Wild, there are worrying whispers that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom could be the last big Nintendo Switch game.

Will Tears Of The Kingdom Be The Last Big Switch Game?

GamesRadar has been doing some sleuthing and noticed that several big names have claimed Tears of the Kingdom will be the last "big" release on the Nintendo Switch.

Although this doesn't mean we won't be getting more games on the console, it could be a sign that change is on the horizon. Remember how Twilight Princess was released on both the GameCube and the Wii to bridge the gap between consoles?

The site notes how GamesIndustry.biz's Chris Dring previously said Nintendo wouldn't have a "significant game for quite some time" following Tears. After this, VGC's Andy Robinson said, "I'm not convinced another huge first-party game other than Zelda is left on Switch."

These words come after Digital Foundry said there was some sort of mid-generation Switch update that was planned up until a point. The worry is that there could be another commercial flop like the Wii U, meaning things could now look ahead to the Switch's successor.

Going against this, there are still major first-party releases like Metroid Prime 4 scheduled for release, as well as hopes we'll get another mainline Mario game.

Is The Switch 2 On The Way?

These wild claims are sure to spark the debate again (we're sorry) about the existence of the Switch 2/Switch Pro. Just when you think they're dead an buried, the rumours of a new-gen refresh for Nintendo's console rear their head.

Robinson says he wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing about new Nintendo hardware as early as next year, but as for when this mythical console could release, your guess is as good as ours.

There are already fears that Tears of the Kingdom's improved capabilities will melt the Switch some six years after it hit the market, and while there's hope for a souped-up console to run it, don't hold your breath.

With the inevitability the Switch is heading into its twilight years, let's start the rumour mill up again about what could be next. Whatever is going on, at least Tears of the Kingdom should remind us why the Switch is great in the first place.
