September 13's Sony State of Play was a fascinating peek into what's on the way from PlayStation, but blimey, did the Nintendo Direct airing earlier in the day take the wind out of its sails.

Revealing new Fire Emblem, Pikmin, and info about the sequel to Breath of the Wild was a pretty tough act to follow. Though PlayStation had a breathtaking God of War: Ragnarok story trailer to show off, fans had already made a decision on who the "winner" was.

Competition aside, though, PlayStation had plenty to share, and a lot of it was very interesting - including one game that looks… familiar.

What Is Rise Of The Ronin?

Among the offerings from the latest State of Play was hiding Rise of the Ronin, a brand new IP in development from Team Ninja after Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. It claims to be an open-world action RPG that takes place during the 19th century in Japan, and it has been confirmed that the game will take place during a difficult time in the country's history in a new blog post.

"Japan is facing the darkest of times as it struggles with its oppressive rulers and deadly diseases while western influence permeates as civil war continues to rage between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Anti-Shogunate factions," says director and president of Team Ninja, Fumihiko Yasuda.

The game looks like a lot of fun, even though we'll be waiting until 2024 to get our hands on it - but fans reckon they've seen it already.

Fans Think Rise Of The Ronin Is Just Assassin's Creed Japan

Players have taken to the internet to suggest that there won't be much need for the upcoming Assassin's Creed game set in Japan now that we have Rise of the Ronin. One joked, "Rise of the Ronin perfect if Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t Assassin's creed enough for you," while another added, "Wow that rise of the ronin literally completely invalidates what ever that Ubisoft Assassin's Creed japan game was gonna be."

Others claim the pair of games are going to be in a race for player attention over the next few years. The game looks great fun, but fans are right in that it will have stiff competition. Gamers have been asking for a Japan-set Assassin's Creed game for longer than we'd care to remember, and while one isn't officially out there yet, Ubisoft would be foolish not to capitalise on the hype. It looks like the Ghost of Tsushima-alike could be the next hot genre on the market.
