It's nearly hammer time, as Kratos and Thor are set for a clash of the titans in God of War Ragnarok. Despite some initial worries that it'll be pushed to 2023, Sony Santa Monica has confirmed the concluding chapter of the franchise's Norse saga is definitely coming this year - we just don't know when.

While God of War's early days were taken up by the Ghost of Sparta dealing with his daddy issues in Ancient Greece, we've long since bested Zeus and set sail for colder climes. In 2018, SSM delivered a soft reboot in the form of God of War, which rightly went on to be dubbed one of the best games of all time. With this in mind, there's a lot riding on its sequel.

When Will God Of War Ragnarok Release?

We're lost in our own River Styx of rumours about when Kratos will lift his Leviathan axe (possibly for the last time), but now, one developer has given our biggest hint of an imminent drop. Posting on Twitter, Lead Destruction Artist, Ruben Morales, teased that Ragnarok is possibly finished, or is at least in a playable state.

Morales said that although he can't show his kid playing Ragnarok, she is a huge fan of the game. Instead, he shared footage of her playing 2018's game. It's understandable why Morales isn't willing/allowed to share Ragnarok gameplay, and with it being one of the year's most-hyped releases, Sony is keeping its cards close to its chest.

God of War Ragnarok was officially confirmed in September 2020, and although the name started as a fan rumour, it eventually stuck. Kratos and son Atreus are back in action once more, with the devastating end of days known as Ragnarok seemingly brought about after Kratos killed Baldur toward the end of the last game. There was a post-credit tease of Thor, who is set to be the de-facto big bad of the story.

What's Going On With God Of War Ragnarok?

Another exciting development suggests more exciting God of War news is soon to hit our screens.  Following Morales' tweet, Cinematics Producer, Estelle Tigani, says she's heading back into the Sony Santa Monica office for the first time in two years to work on something special. Although she doesn't expand on what that is, many are guessing it could be a suitably glossy gameplay trailer, possible for a Ragnarok-centric PlayStation Showcase.

Wild rumours claimed Ragnarok would be announced in January and land in April, but here we are, and no closer to God of War Ragnarok's release. However, now that we know it's been classified and is seemingly playable, we can't be that far away. It's more than just the end of a Norse era, as insiders claim Ragnarok could be the last PS4 exclusive before we move over to a native PS5. And so, Kratos' reign is over.
