The year is 2042, we have flying cars, Elon Musk is married to his third robotic wife, and The Simpsons is celebrating Season 50. Still, there's no sign of The Elder Scrolls 6. Back in 2022, it's a close-fought race on which game will be the slowest to release... Grand Theft Auto 6 or The Elder Scrolls 6?

While the sprawling saga of The Elder Scrolls has been touring Tamriel since 1994, it was the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011 that really secured its place in the history books. Although Skyrim is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time, we're ravenous to know what comes next and when we'll be able to unsheathe our swords for The Elder Scrolls 6.

Is The Elder Scrolls 6 On The Way?

Thanks to a brief teaser at E3 2018, we know The Elder Scrolls 6 is officially out there somewhere. Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda has thrown something of a spanner in the works, and although we know TES 6 will launch as an Xbox exclusive, we've also been warned it's a long way off. It turns out, that could be even further than first thought.

A now-deleted LinkedIn post from a new starter at Bethesda suggested that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in its pre-production phase. On their profile, it says "Bethesda Games Studios sets the benchmark for open-world gaming and is currently in full production on Starfield, its first new universe in 25 years, and pre-production on the highly-anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI."

What Does This Mean For The Elder Scrolls 6?

Before you panic, it's perfectly natural that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in its early stages. Remember, the Bethesda team is hard at work on Starfield, which will be the studio's first new IP in a decade and is still nine months away from its own release.

Given that Bethesda games typically have a four/five-year development cycle, we could be looking at 2027 for The Elder Scrolls 6. Then again, that's a complete stab in the dark, and it could be sooner or even much longer. At the time of writing, the profile suggests Starfield is the only game in full development. Hey, bad news for Fallout 5 fans.

For now, it's back to Skyrim to enjoy fishing in the Anniversary Edition. Alternatively, you could check out The Elder Scrolls Online and its hopeful 2022 update that will apparently add a brand-new world. None of this is The Elder Scrolls 6, and although we never thought it wouldn't be, at least we know its pre-production will be cooking up something suitably magical.
