Fallout 5 Is On Its Way - But Not For Quite A While
Vault dwellers and wastelanders, you have a reason to get excited for Fallout again. Speaking with IGN, Todd Howard confirmed that Bethesda have an idea for a potential Fallout 5, but it won't see the light of day for a long time yet.
What Did Todd Howard Say About Fallout?
Todd Howard appeared on an episode of IGN Unfiltered recently to talk about Skyrim's 10th anniversary. Although Bethesda Game Studios are busy with Starfield and the next Elder Scrolls title - which recently had a leaked release date placing it in 2023 - Howard was asked of the possibility of another Fallout title being handed to a different studio.
He shut down the idea, while adding that Bethesda have a prospective idea for the next Fallout title, stating: "I don't see... Look, Fallout's really part of our DNA here. We've worked with other people from time to time – I can't say what's gonna happen. You know, we have a one-pager on Fallout 5, what we want to do."
It wouldn't be the first time a Fallout title was handed to another developer, as New Vegas was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, who are now under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella with Bethesda. This has led to plenty of rumours of a New Vegas sequel, but based on Howard's words in the interview that seems unlikely too.
Does This Mean Fallout 5 Is In Development?
Based on Howard's wording, there is an idea for the next title, but nothing more at this stage. The "one-pager" he refers to is just a term for a document that broadly conceptualises a project, including vague plot details, mechanics, and other ideas for the game.
Howard did go on to elaborate more on Fallout, saying: "Again, if I could wave my hand and have [Fallout 5] out – you know, I'd like to find a way to accelerate what we do, but I can't really say today or commit to anything, [like] what's going to happen when."
He also made it pretty clear that the studio is focused all in on Starfield right now, but it's good news for the Fallout fans to know that Bethesda is still thinking of the franchise's future.
