Monkey Island is back, and we're all the better for it. Despite its huge impact on the point-and-click adventure genre, the pirate puzzler has been long dormant. Though it hasn't been exactly taking over the gaming industry again, it's always nice to see a familiar face.

The home gaming icon is making a pretty bold return with a fresh new lick of paint, and long-time fans are incredibly excited. Return to Monkey Island has a brand-new pre-order bonus that calls back to a pre-order disaster from the history books of gaming.

What Is The Return To Monkey Island Release Date?

Last night's Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation brought with it some big reveals. Away from Hogwarts Legacy and Dead Island 2, Return to Monkey Island brought its own arsenal - showing off new locations for the game and a new release date.

If you can't wait to play Return to Monkey Island, rest assured it's got an imminent release date. Better yet, it's pretty soon. Devolver Digital's game is set to launch on September 19, meaning it's less than a month away. The trailer announced that pre-orders for the game are now open, and that they come with a very special bonus.

If you pre-order Return to Monkey Island, you'll earn yourself some very shiny and intriguing horse armour - but you won't be able to use it. Instead, it'll sit idle in your inventory and serve no purpose other than being mere eye candy. This might seem like a miscellaneous gag, but it's actually a callback.

Monkey Island References The Elder Scrolls With Its Pre-Order Bonus

The pre-order bonus may seem bizarre to the uninitiated, but it's actually a reference to one of the earliest examples of a DLC blunder. The horse armour calls back to the DLC armour that players could buy for their steed in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This was a piece of DLC that was barely useful and became synonymous with useless purchasable items in video games.

It's a silly little bonus that seems to match up with the tone of Return to Monkey Island, and the fact that it's literally useless only makes it funnier. If the rest of Rod Gilbert's adventure is anything like this gag suggests, then we're definitely on board.
