We're crying tears, tears of joy, as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is finally paragliding into our lives. While the next chapter in the growing history of Hyrule was pushed from its 2022 release date, a little longer in the oven has done the world of good if the latest trailer is anything to go by.

As a sequel to 2017's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom looks set to continue the legacy of Zelda being up there with Mario and Pokemon as Nintendo's biggest IPs.

Like with most Zelda games, we're expecting Nintendo to reinvent and adapt. Much like Majora's Mask was a rare sequel (following on from Ocarina of Time), players are hoping for something unique this time around.

Tears Of The Kingdom Teases Playable Zelda

Saving the realm repeatedly with Link as the Hero of Time is all well and good, but after 37 years of doing the same thing, it's about time for a change.

The latest trailer has all the usual ideas of Sheikah Slates, paragliding, and horseriding, but we see new mechanics like Link doing some Sonic Frontiers-style rail-riding and vehicle building - giving us some Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts vibes.

The official Zelda Twitter account has shared a snap of Zelda with the caption, "Princess of Hyrule Kingdom. You seem to have something unfamiliar on your left hand...?"

As Zelda is holding a Sheikah Slate - Link's tool of the trade - fans are going wild that we'll be able to play as her. Supporting the idea, one fan cheered, "Playable Zelda copium because why would she have an upgraded one?!"

Can You Play As Ganondorf In Tears Of The Kingdom?

Elsewhere, there are theories we might be able to play as Ganondorf. It might be wild to theorise about playing as the franchise's big bad, but the first Tears of the Kingdom footage set tongues wagging.

Although the theory was miles off that the game would be called Demise of the Wild, there are still legs in the idea of jumping between different periods of history. Zelda has a stupidly complicated timeline, but bringing everything together could work.

Also, listen out for the key moment we hear Princess Zelda say, "Please lend me your power," in the Tears of the Kingdom trailer. It's a seemingly throwaway line that teases the ability to play as Link's long-suffering love interest, however, we think it sounds like, "Please lend HIM your power."

We'll admit the idea of a playable Ganondorf is a little out there, but we're fully sold on playing as Zelda, which would be the first mainline game since Spirit Tracks to let you do so. Could Link put down the Master Sword to make way for that plucky princess or vile villain? Watch this space.
