After Activision backtracked on its promises of a two-year Modern Warfare 2 cycle - by confirming that Sledgehammer Games is developing a 2023 release - fans feel lied to and are demanding refunds on their skins.

Activision inadvertently announced its plans for a 2023 annual release by adding the detail in the fine print of its quarterly financial report. This was further backed by leaks that the upcoming "premium game" is intended for a November release and a beta test in October.

But having been hoodwinked into thinking that Modern Warfare 2 was a game that would last two years, players are furious and want compensation for buying skins that will soon be redundant.

Call Of Duty Fans Feel 'Lied To' By 2023 Title Announcement

Although there is already an ongoing plan to boycott the 2023 release, a group of fans who parted with their hard-earned cash claim they have been tricked and "lied to".

Taking to Reddit, one irate gamer claimed that they spent money on their first-ever Call of Duty bundle solely on the basis that they would be able to own it for two years instead of just one.

"I was under the impression this game would be the most relevant for 2 years. I know that isn't much of an extension, but it gave me hope that anything I had or used, would continue to be there," said the Reddit user in a popular thread.

"I don't feel that anymore. I feel slightly lied to in that aspect." They weren't alone in their rumblings, as the thread soon exploded with others who were sharpening their pitchforks.

MW2 Fans Want Refunds On Skins

The Redditor was instantly backed up by a wealth of players who claimed they only spent money on the game knowing they would have their bundles for two years.

As an extension, others claimed that they even purchased MW2 as a whole because of that, having strayed away from the $70 whack each year in favour of free-to-play games like Warzone.

"Yes, I only bought it because I believed it would get 2 years of content. The only way to show this issue to them is to boycott all bundles and new games until they can actually provide," one fan claimed.

"I'll still keep playing, but I want my money back," added the original poster, saying that they were talking specifically about the "cosmetic purchases," not the overall game.

Some pointed out that the MW2 skins will still be available in Warzone 2 for the foreseeable future, and there's no ruling out that the "Modern Warfare spinoff" from Sledgehammer won't allow the skins to transfer over on the back of the two-year promises. Then again, that might be wishful thinking...
