Activision Confirms A ‘Full Premium Release’ Call of Duty Game For 2023
In what appears to be a full U-Turn from the previously proposed two-year tenure for Modern Warfare 2, Activision has promised a brand-new game for 2023.
The plan was for Modern Warfare 2 to be the first-ever Call of Duty to break the annual release business model by serving as the flagship title for two years, giving the community a well-needed break from the $60 deposits each November.
But, recent statements revealed in Activision's quarterly financial report have proven damning, as they confirm that there will be a "full annual premium release in the blockbuster series".
Activision Confirm A New Call of Duty Game for 2023
In a report which details the record-breaking financial success of Modern Warfare 2, the developers used this opportunity to detail that the fourth quarter of 2023 will follow suit, as they prepare to launch another premium title.
The report reads, "Across the Call of Duty franchise, our teams are working to amplify the success of the fourth quarter, with 2023 plans including even more engaging live services across platforms and the next full annual premium release in the blockbuster series."
It also implied that this annual release is not tied to Warzone: Mobile, which will launch in full this year and will instead be a continuance of the console and PC cannon.
What Call of Duty Game Is Coming In 2023?
Previous reports from Bloomberg and Call of Duty insiders claimed that the second year of Modern Warfare 2's lifespan will be dedicated to a DLC featuring a catalogue of throwback maps and modes, including a Greatest Hits lineup for multiplayer.
However, this is now expected to be released as an entirely new game, as CharlieIntel has claimed that the 2023 instalment is not a game produced by Treyarch, who will be the developers behind the next major instalment within the franchise.
Instead, the Modern Warfare 2 (year two) content is expected to release as an entirely separate entity, which will presumably tie into the main hub similarly to how Warzone 2 and DMZ do.
