Are you ready for Crash Smash? Put down your Wumpa fruits because fans are obsessed with the idea of Crash Bandicoot joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the game's latest DLC character. Players of Nintendo's iconic brawler have been promised all six DLC characters from the Fighters Pass Volume 2 will land before the year is out, meaning there are only a few coveted spots left on the roster. Could Crash follow in the footsteps of Xenoblade Chronicles' Mythra, Minecraft's Steve, and Persona's Joker?

Nintendo has confirmed there are no plans for a third Fighters Pass, so it really is the end of the road for Ultimate as we look toward the inevitable sequel. There have been criticisms that Vol. 2 has failed to deliver on its own hype, thanks to some pretty obscure characters making it into the mix. The likes of ARMS' Min-Min are hardly a gaming icon, so all eyes are on the final two slots to see if the lineup can redeem itself. That spinning marsupial would be one way to go out with a bang.

Is Crash Bandicoot coming to Super Smash Bros?

Crash Bandicoot adding his name to the already bulging Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster came after the official Crash Twitter shared a cryptic post listing things the titular hero needs to do before he turns 25. For those who don't know, 2021 marks 25 years since the first game whirred into our lives and kickstarted the whole Crash saga. Although there's no direct mention of Super Smash Bros, there was some strange imagery that could be linking to the fighting franchise. In the second picture, fans noticed that a greyed-out logo looks similar to the first iteration of Super Smash Bros. from 1999.

Others picked up that a potential red symbol might be related to the Smash series logo, or even represent the wax seal that fighters are given when they've invited to join the game. Despite later entries in the world of Crash being handed from pillar to post, there's been a renewed interest in the name since the release of the N. Sane Trilogy in 2017. Interestingly, rumours of Crash come after a bizarre tease that Halo's Master Chief is also joining Ultimate. Master Chief AND Crash Bandicoot might be too much to hope for, but fingers crossed the final two fighters could be these gaming goliaths.

When could we see Crash Bandicoot in Super Smash Bros Ultimate?

Even if it's all just some wishful thinking, there's method to the madness. Naughty Dog first released Crash Bandicoot on September 9, 1996. There are a lot of big anniversaries in 2021, with Pokemon celebrating 25 years and The Legend of Zelda honouring 35, however, Crash's own milestone has largely slid under the radar. The dual coupling of Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was released in March, but it's unclear when the next fighter is out. Crash landing toward the end of the year makes a lot of sense - especially since the first game's European release was in November 1996.

This isn't the first time we've heard about Crash in Smash, and back when Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time released, players were equally obsessed with the idea he'd be donning an Aku Aku mask and leaping into Ultimate. Of course, the future of Crash remains uncertain after Activision moved the Toys for Bob team over to work on Call of Duty: Warzone. Some think it's put the nail in the coffin of a potential Crash 5, but things have gone quiet since. Even if Crash 5 is up in the air, adding the gaming legend to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be a relatively easy way to make sure we're celebrating his 25th anniversary in style.
