Assassin's Creed has undergone a lot of change over the last few years. Coming from its humble beginnings as a stealthy - well - assassination game, to a hefty and exploration-heavy RPG; there's a lot of difference between the start of the franchise and its latest adventures.

The latest, 2021's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, is a swaggering stomp across England with much more focus on weighty combat and the experience of being a true brute - but many still miss the stealthier elements that were the bedrock of the franchise.

Well, it looks like there's about to be some good news for those fans, as a new Assassin's Creed game is coming in 2023, and it looks like the series is going back to its roots.

A Stealth-Focused Assassin's Creed Is Arriving Next Year

Not only is a brand new Assassin's Creed title set in Baghdad reportedly gearing up to launch next year, but supposedly, it's going to be re-embracing the sneakiness of the franchise's past.

The game is codenamed "Rift" and is set to feature Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Basim in a smaller-in-scale title than we're used to. Initially planned as a DLC expansion for Valhalla, the project has since grown out of the game's shadow.

The game was claimed to exist by Bloomberg, however, Ubisoft has refused to confirm the game is, in fact, in development.

Will Assassin's Creed "Rift" Count As A Spin-Off?

The branding of the game might seem unimportant, but for the lineage of Assassin's Creed going forward, it's important to recognise the status of the games yet to come.

As this game is likely to be something to tide fans over until the ambitious Assassin's Creed Infinity, will star a franchise side character, and will likely be much smaller than the series' other mainline titles, it's quite likely that whatever Rift turns out to be will be classed as a spin-off or side game. We'll bet it still gets sold for full price, though.

The idea of a return to form for the franchise is exciting, and we're definitely interested in seeing how it turns out. Any stealth is good, and Assassin's Creed has proven to be a master of its craft. Roll on 2023.
