This is of course exclusive to the Java version which runs on PC, so unfortunately console players will need to stick with the vanilla version of the game.
By downloading Optifine you can expect a FPS boost of about double the frames, and a reduction in lag. The mod also includes a bunch of HD textures, ranging from custom terrain to item textures. You can also expect boosts to elements such as lighting, VSync, elemental improvements, and a bunch of configurable animations and details, meaning you can turn off the sun if you wanted to.
