Elden Ring Stonesword Key: What Do They Do?
Click to enlargeStonesword Keys are key items that can be used to break imp statue seals and open white fog doors, letting you access new rooms and areas. Each of these keys can only be used once, and they vanish afterwards, meaning you need to be somewhat mindful of using them.
Most of the time it should only take one Stonesword Key to break the seal on an imp statue, but others will require two. You can see how many it will take approaching one of the statutes, and looking at the hole in the head to see if a key has already been placed inside.
These imp statues are available across the Lands Between, and are routinely situated in the open-world, inside legacy dungeons, in regular dungeons like catacombs, and in the large underground areas. Typically, you'll gain access to new items inside many of the rooms that require Stonesword Keys, but sometimes it can unlock new routes for you to take.
It's also worth noting there are special forms of Stonesword Keys, like the Imbued Stone Key which is used to access more magical areas, like the Four Belfries in West Liurnia. These are much rarer to find, and consequently there are fewer places for them to be used, but they are also worth looking out for.

Elden Ring Stonesword Key: Where Can They Be Found?

Mostly you'll discover them from just exploring the world, where you'll often find them on dead bodies and inside of chests. As they are key items, they appear with a blue light before being looted (as opposed to the white light that most lootable items give off) so always watch out for these, as they are typically found off the beaten path, places that require jumping to get to, or next to tough enemies.
As well as looting the Stonesword Keys, limited amounts can be purchased from certain merchants and NPCs. These are:
- Patches - Found in the Murkwater Cave in Limgrave, and he sets up his shop if you let him surrender.
- Isolated Merchant - Found in a shack on the very west side of Weeping Peninsula, costs 2000 runes.
- Nomadic Merchant - On the eastern side of the Weeping Peninsula, also 2000 runes each.
- Nomadic Merchant - This one can be found in the south of Caelid, but these Stonesword Keys go for 4000 runes.
- Nomadic Merchant - In the western area of the Altus Plateau, also 4000 runes a piece.
- Nomadic Merchant - Found toward the north of the Mount Gelmir area, with keys costing 5000 runes each.
- Twin Maiden Husks - Purchased in the Roundtable Hold and costs 4000 apiece.
- Nomadic Merchant - Found in the Siofra River underground for 2000 per key.
- Imprisoned Merchant - Found in the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, and sells them for 5000 runes each.
Lastly, you can also get an extra Stonesword Key as a Keepsake when creating your character and starting the game.
