Having ramped up a huge amount of interest as the "Skyrim Killer" after a hauntingly beautiful trailer in 2020, the Avowed realise date has been sheathed under a cloak of invisibility by Obsidian. The Xbox exclusive rival to Elden Ring has disappeared like Gollum in the shadows of the Misty Mountains, having first whet the appetite of the middle-earth RPG loving fans. Anticipating Avowed fans will surely be keeping a close eye on any updates for when we can expect to finally wield dark magic on one hand and a flame-kissed blade in the other. So, here's everything we know about the Avowed release date, trailers, and gameplay.

Avowed Release Date

Sadly, there is still no official Avowed release date. All we can do is keep our ears to the ground and look out for any new information we have about Avowed and the other projects that are currently underway by the game's developer, Obsidian, that could give us an estimated release date. The most likely update that we'll get on Avowed will be through Obsidian's other upcoming RPG, as The Outer Worlds 2 release date is expected to land first. Crucially for Avowed, the Xbox exclusive will be aiming to kick on with their development before their main rival, the Elder Scrolls, decide to roll out the carpet on their sixth title - their first since Bethesda was acquired by Microsoft.

Obsidian has certainly come a long way from the days of being a small indie game developer. The company gained a loyal fanbase thanks to its release of games like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout New Vegas, and South Park: The Stick of Truth. Things were a bit touch and go for Obsidian due to financial troubles, however, the situation quickly turned around for the game developer when it was acquisitioned by Microsoft in 2018. Since then, Obsidian has released The Outer Worlds and Grounded.

Avowed Trailers

There is only one official Avowed trailer at the time of writing. The clip lasts just over a minute and paints a shadowy picture of a fantastical world of legends, magic, and monsters. As the viewer follows a burning arrow that is shot from the high walls of a castle, they are transported across the land of Eora. We learn from the narrator that Eora is a land forged from a war that turned "heroes into queens and kings and decimated our foes". However, over time, Eora has lost its way and the sins of the people have spawned terrifying monsters which hide in the shadows.

This could all change thanks to the appearance of the hero who is, of course, controlled by the player, given how the game is a first-person RPG. While we don't see any more of the hero other than their hands, we do get a brief glimpse of the dual-wielding magic and melee weaponry that we will see in Avowed. Tamriel travellers will, no doubt, recognise the similarities here with the combat in SkyrimAlthough, there are claims that Obsidian is also taking inspiration for Avowed from one of its very own successful titles.

Avowed Gameplay: The Outer Worlds Meets Skyrim

Avowed will apparently be a crossover of The Outer Worlds and Skyrim

Obsidian | Bethesda

The Avowed gameplay is set to be a crossover between Obsidian's space-flick video game The Outer Worlds and Bethesda's iconic Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim: "Avowed seems to be based on a similar, albeit enhanced engine from The Outer Worlds, complete with action-oriented first-person combat and deep RPG exploration and narrative systems. We were told Avowed will feature multiple class playstyles and borrow from Skyrim's two-handed combat system." You can read more about the reported Sci-Fi and fantasy crossover here.

Skyrim fans have certainly been making the connection ever since Avowed was first announced. One fan commented: "Bethesda: we are delaying TES 6, Obsidian: fine, I'll do it myself". Of course, referring to the delay of the next highly-anticipated Elder Scrolls game, which we're still desperate for an official Elder Scrolls 6 release date for.

Avowed: Pillars Of Eternity Universe

Avowed's trailer made some hints to the Pillars of Eternity universe

Avowed should be an exciting prospect for fans of Obsidian's successful Pillars of Eternity video game as the game will be a spin-off from the fantasy RPG. For those who aren't familiar with Pillars Of Eternity, the game came out in 2015 and is also set in the magical land of Eora. The story centres around the protagonist who discovers that they are a "Watcher" and can see the past lives of others and interact with souls. The player's task is to decipher what has caused the awakening of their powers and what is causing the infants of Eora to be born without souls.

It's not entirely clear how exactly Avowed fits into the world of the Pillars Of Eternity, but eagle-eyed fans spotted numerous hints in the trailer. For example, the humongous statue which is seen towering over the landscape is reportedly Galawain, the Father of Monsters and patron of the hunt. Whereas, the symbols strewn on the banners of the castle walls represent The Exiled Queen herself, Woedica.

Avowed Platforms

Avowed is set to be an Xbox exclusive, similarly to the Elder Scrolls 6But, of course, with Obsidian being acquired by Microsoft, it was expected that Avowed wouldn't be making its way to PlayStation consoles. This means that the platforms that Avowed will be playable on are as follows:

  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox Game Pass
  • Windows 10

Avowed may be shrouded in a Microsoft mist of mystery, but that doesn't mean we're any less excited for its release, whenever that may be. With a plethora of fantasy-based games coming soon to the industry, Avowed is sure set to be one of the huge titles that transport players into a world of magic and wonder.

For all the latest updates on Avowed make sure to keep an eye on GGRecon for everything you need to know.
