There are still a lot of reservations when it comes to video game movies, and frankly, it's entirely fair. Super Mario Bros, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, even the original Tomb Raider films - movies that draw from interactive mediums don't often do so well.

Thankfully, though, recent titles have suggested that the tide could change. 2018's Tomb Raider was a game-accurate and exciting change of pace for the franchise, the recent Sonic the Hedgehog film proved itself as a quality family film that earned itself a sequel, and while Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City didn't win critics over, it still offered a cinematic adaptation of the first two games in the franchise that pleased dedicated fans.

But, one film defied all expectations and was genuinely great - Detective Pikachu. Rob Letterman's 2019 outing was a movie that offered insight into the world of Pokemon like we had never seen before.

Why Is Detective Pikachu Trending On Twitter?

Fans have rallied up on Twitter to express how desperately they want to see Pokemon: Detective Pikachu get a sequel. It doesn't seem like there was much to spur the game trending on Twitter. Still, the topic managed to make the day's top trends, with the sheer enthusiasm of the film's fans. It's pretty impressive, to be honest.

But, there's some bad news to come with this trend - because as it turns out, a Detective Pikachu sequel might not be on the cards after all.

We Might Not Get A Detective Pikachu Sequel

Despite fans professing their love for the first film, it doesn't look like we're going to be getting a new Detective Pikachu film any time soon.

Last year in an interview with Inverse, lead actor Justice Smith opened up about the possibility of making a sequel to the film, but stated that he doesn't expect it to happen.

"I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes", he said. "I don't think it's going to happen. I really hope so though. Honestly, I'm such a huge fan, who knows, who knows? I hope so." We hope so too.

It's a shame that one of the top quality outliers of the video game genre might not get to take another swing at a new narrative, but sadly, it's a reality we're going to have to get used to. The Pokemon world on the big screen was a lively and exuberant experience, so here's hoping we'll get to see Ryme City once again.
