Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League Teases Arkham Knight Sequel
Ever since Rocksteady Games announced it was moving ahead with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, fans have been asking how this will connect to its Arkham games.
From 2009-2015, Rocksteady helmed a trilogy of Arkham games, which are held as some of the best superhero titles of all time. With such critical acclaim, no wonder the developer is sticking to the world of DC comics.
There was plenty of speculation about a sequel to Arkham Knight, and although Kill the Justice League seemingly nipped that in the bud, The Game Awards confirmed a touching tie to the Arkhamverse.
The New Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League Trailer Is A Tribute To Kevin Conroy
A new trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League appeared at The Game Awards and featured the return of Kevin Conroy as the Caped Crusader. Conroy was a legend of the animated and video game world. He notably voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne in the three Arkham games but tragically passed away on November 10.
The latest trailer includes a looming silhouette of the Dark Knight, while the Suicide Squad tortures a possessed version of the Flash. Batman steps out of the shadows and does his usual growling voice to scare the bejesus out of the squad.
Harley Quinn reassures her team, "Batman doesn't kill people," but this seemingly Brainiac-corrupted version of him does, as a hapless security guard drops to the floor, dead. We also hear Conroy's signature vocals as Batman says, "I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!"
As well as the "Shadows" trailer confirming that Kill the Justice League will be Conroy's last-ever role (a fitting tribute), it hints that this game is an Arkham Knight sequel.
Is Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League An Arkham Knight Sequel?
Breaking down what's going on here, it looks like Task Force X has set up shop in a TV studio. There's a set in the background that reads "Arkham Asylum: Intensive Treatment." This is a clear nod to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, where the game's events took place.
If you aren't convinced Kill the Justice League continues the Arkham Knight arc, we also hear music cues from the Arkham games. Finally, Harley refers to Batman as "Bruce," which suggests this comes after she found out his identity in Arkham Knight.
Arkham Knight ended with Wayne Manor blowing up, but due to Batman's "No Kill" rule, even the developers suggest he wouldn't have killed Alfred, so the two retreated into hiding in the Batcave. Even if Batman died in Arkham Knight, the Arkham games have previously used the Lazarus Pit to resurrect characters.
Whether Kill the Justice League is an Arkham Knight sequel or not, it's sure to be emotional to get one last performance from the legend that is Conroy. Hopefully, the game's success will lead to more of the Arkhamverse - even if the lead himself isn't able to return.
