If you're familiar with playing Rocket League with friends, you'll know Discord or console parties are the best way to communicate. Whether you're jamming to music together, chatting about your day, or getting sweaty with the comms, the in-game voice chat is currently unusable.

Players have since been calling for the developers to fix the voice chat, especially as it only works if you're on the same console type (e.g. all playing on Xbox).

The community have been vocal about having a working voice chat, especially to help teams cohere in games - no more pesky triple challenges. The feature could also add an element of fun, with the possibility of hearing the opposing team after a goal or demolition.

Within a new community update, the Rocket League developers finally confirmed what fans have been wanting to hear.

Is Cross-Platform Voice Chat Coming To Rocket League?

Alongside some other new features such as shop updates, changes and additions to Tournaments including multiple game modes, and brand-new LTMs, the developers confirmed that in-game voice chat will be getting a makeover.

Whilst the details were few and far between, the developers said "we can’t promise anything, we are planning, and pushing on some of the more prominent requests, like improved voice chat", before adding updates will come before the end of the season.

Will Rocket League Cross-Platform Voice Chat Be Good, Or Another Avenue Of Toxicity?

With the news breaking, many of Rocket League's top personalities took to social media to both express excitement and concern over the feature.

Content creator and Rocket League creative genius Treyven "Lethamyr" Robitaille applauded the new features, hinting at much more content becoming available with these changes.

However, concern was rather rife when it comes to dealing with toxicity - a problem that Rocket League is all too familiar with.

The voice chat option opens up a range of problems in terms of discrimination, and much of the female player base have expressed fears about the feature.

Rocket League's young demographic has seen toxicity become too apparent in the game, although many wrongdoers are banned through automated profanity filters.

Should the developers look to up the ante on the voice chat, it may only work if the regulations are heightened and a team of manual reviewers are on call to deal with any toxicity.

Executed properly and the addition can be great for Rocket League, especially solo queuers, although the manpower needed definitely adds to the concerns.

Rocket League cross-platform voice chat is set to be rolled out in August, when the current season expires.
