Activision Blizzard has recently been under fire for a large number of alleged internal issues, following a lawsuit from the Californian Government, and it doesn't seem they're getting away from the headlines with their in-game development either.

The Overwatch community has been endlessly waiting for their franchises' revival, ever since the sequel was revealed way back in November 2019. With very few details spared, and no release date set in stone, the player base has been praying to Sombre to come up with a quick solution and bring Overwatch 2 to the screens before the turn of the year.

However, it appears that the developers are not going to be launching the game this year, or even the year after. According to a leak, Activision Blizzard will not have Overwatch 2 ready until 2023.

Overwatch 2 Reportedly Set To be Launched In 2023

According to Overwatch leaker "Metro", multiple sources have confirmed that "development is taking longer than expected", and the title will not be ready in 2022.

The title was first announced in 2019, with the target for release being autumn 2021, following the conclusion of the OWL Season 4.

However, it now appears that, despite no major updates being added to the original title, Overwatch 2 development has fallen way behind schedule.

Metro continued to summarise the thoughts of the Overwatch community, adding: "If it turns out to be true, RIP OW no way the game will be alive for another year and a half without major updates."

A number of high-profile Overwatch players and streamers have retired or switched titles during the current season, with the likes of Andrej "babybay" Francisty moving over to VALORANT and Nam-joo "Striker" Kwon hanging up his keyboard and mouse.

The switch to 5v5 in OW2 will also be driving some players away from the game, specifically in the Tank role, adding to the woes of the community. With so many players leaving this year, should development take until 2023, Overwatch could find itself with an irreversible deficit.
