Feeling hotter under the collar than Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, we're shouting: "You were the chosen one" at Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The much-hyped and darker sequel to 2019's Fallen Order is officially on the way and is poised to be one of 2023's biggest games. Sadly, we're getting a new-gen Star Wars Jedi: Survivor that will ditch PS4 and Xbox One.

As well as winning a slew of awards and becoming a best-selling AAA release on PS4 and Xbox One, Fallen Order was praised for its grippy storyline - set around the events of the devastating Order 66 - and introducing Cameron Monaghan's Cal Kestis as a brand-new character. Cal's story continues in Survivor, which picks up five years after he and the Stinger Mantis crew escaped Darth Vader's clutches.

EA and Respawn Entertainment finally pulled Survivor out of the bacta tank and confirmed our biggest fears. Speaking to StarWars.com around this year's Star Wars Celebration, Game Director Stig Asmussen explained what gives Survivor an advantage over its 2019's predecessor.

"I think the biggest thing is ray tracing, or lighting. That's allowing us to do real-time lighting, all the time, at a fidelity that's well beyond anything that we've ever produced before," said Asmussen. "Since it's real-time, we get to see the changes as we tweak the lights — immediately, essentially. That means that we have more time to polish, that means that we can iterate more, and we can get better results that feel more filmic."

Asmussen also went on to praise the "blazing fast drives" the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series have. We've already seen this with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's ability to jump between areas without loading, while Asmussen adds that "these consoles have such fast storage has made it even easier." Promoting the PS5 version, he concluded by hyping the "interesting haptics" and promised Respawn is "digging" into these. The multi-platform Hogwarts Legacy recently showcased the PS5-exclusive features, and it sounds like Survivor is following suit.

Is This The End Of Last-Gen Consoles?

We always knew this day would come - but are the PS4 and Xbox One really going the way of Padme Amidala? Reports already claimed that Sony Santa Monica's God of War Ragnarok would be one of the last PS4 exclusives before future releases will join Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales as PS5 natives. With continued supply problems and the PS5 especially being hard to get hold of, it's a risky move to unleash Survivor as new-gen only.

In a matter of weeks, the whole industry has seemingly made the leap from last-gen to new-gen. Warner Bros. Interactive started things off when Gotham Knights was confirmed as new-gen only, and now, there are also worries this year's release of Hogwarts Legacy is going the same way. Still, most of us expected Survivor to bridge the gap between generations much like it joins George Lucas' original and prequel trilogies. If you haven't got a PS5 or Xbox Series yet, you'd best start saving those Galactic Credits.
