Halo Infinite Ranked Gameplay Will Separate Controller And Mouse Players
Halo Infinite is set to bring a lot of players back to Xbox after the long and arduous console wars. The Microsoft veteran title has promised a return to the ultimate Halo experience, and following news of a new battle royale mode to come to the game, many fans are incredibly excited for a return to its multiplayer mode. And while the cross-play between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC is interesting, a new caveat has been introduced that will either delight or divide players.

343 Industries, developers of Halo Infinite, have recently confirmed that there will be some serious divisions in their matchmaking, despite the excitements surrounding the game’s cross-platform progression. In a new blog post, PC development lead Mike Romero has explained the plans for ranked play in Halo Infinite’s online games.
“Social playlist and custom matches are open to all, you can play on any platform and any device with anyone you like! For ranked matches, we plan to restrict competitive playlists based on input type, not console versus PC.”
So it looks like you’re not going to be able to play competitive games with your friends using different inputs for the time being. Maybe this could be altered in the future, but for now, if you’re looking to rank up, it’ll only be with players using the same peripherals as you are.

It makes sense - players in other cross-platform games cry out unfairness when gaming with keyboard users, allowing them to have potentially sharper aim and quicker reaction times than those using controllers.
But, it’s not the end of the world, as the Xbox Series X|S’ keyboard and mouse compatibility could allow for a nice workaround. If you’re playing with a PC user only with a keyboard and mouse, you can connect your own to your console to play ranked with them. Plus, you can perform the same trick the other way around, with PC users being able to connect a controller to their device to play in controller lobbies.
343 industries’ decision to separate ranked play by peripherals might end up being a controversial one, but at the end of the day, it’s likely to balance the game’s competitive play nicely. After all, playing with a controller and taking a flick-wrist needle to the face doesn’t sound all that fun.
