After months of speculation and plenty of revving our engines, it looks like a remastered trilogy of Grand Theft Auto games is on the way. It was only yesterday we covered how a series of Take-Two takedowns were our the closest tease yet of a GTA remastered trilogy, but now, it's all-but-confirmed.

While some of us are still sat (like mouldy peaches) waiting for an official announcement of GTA 6, the rest have been combing the internet for credible evidence that we'll be giving some old favourites a fresh lick of paint. Considering the GTA series really hit its stride with the introduction of the 3D GTA III, the idea of remastering older games for a new generation is sure to open a goldmine of opportunities.

What is the GTA Remastered trilogy?

According to Kotaku, we need wonder no more because the GTA Remastered Trilogy is very much real. Sources close to the site have reiterated the rumoured bundling of 2001's GTA III, 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming soon.

Kotaku claims these three gaming giants have been remastered using Unreal Engine, which has combined "new and old graphics". One of the sources says they've seen a snippet of the games and how it reminded them of a "heavily-modded" GTA game. Even though the original UI of the games is being tweaked, all three will apparently be in keeping with the PS2-era games. Until we see actual footage of the GTA Remastered Trilogy in action, it will be hard to picture what these updated titles look like.

The news keeps on coming, with Scottish studio Rockstar Dundee apparently beavering away on the GTA Remastered Trilogy. The relatively new branch of Rockstar is reportedly working on the remasters and the much-hyped next-gen port of GTA V. All in all, everything appears to be on track for a late October/early November 2021 release of the GTA Remastered Trilogy.

When can we play the GTA Remastered Trilogy?

There were apparently plans to bundle the remastered games as an added bonus for Grand Theft Auto Online or next-gen GTA V players, however, the coronavirus pandemic affected things and forced Take-Two to alter its release schedule. Things were then shifted again, which has led to this new release date.

If you want to know where you'll be able to play the trilogy, Take-Two is working on a release for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC, Stadia, and mobile. Giving the whole spectrum of gaming options, it means the mythical GTA Remastered Trilogy would undoubtedly be a major hitter. Although the PC and mobile ports are rumoured to be moved into 2022, the idea of GTA on the Switch is huge!

As a final coup de grâce, the success of these remakes could lead to more for the likes of Red Dead Redemption. We previously covered how the 2010 cowboy adventure was poised for a remaster, which more looks more likely than ever. Even though Rockstar Games hasn't responded, Kotaku's insider track comes from sources that have previously confirmed GTA Online and Red Dead Online updates months before they happened.

So, get ready to play as Claude, Tommy Vercetti, and CJ Johnson in a whole new way. For once, it looks like Rockstar rumours are on the money.
