The writing was already on the wall for Red Dead Online, but now, outraged players have officially started their own campaign to "save" Rockstar's troubled title. Safe to say, the 2022 update hasn't gone down well in the Old West.

It's baffling to think it's been nine years since GTA Online released, and while the developer has continued to milk its Los Santos cash cow, things haven't been going so well for its Red Dead rival. Red Dead Online road into town in 2019, but less than three years later, it's already in a 'pistols at dawn' showdown with its player base.

What Did The Red Dead Online Update Introduce?

With Rockstar staff just getting back from the Christmas break, should we really have suggested a massive RDO overhaul on a par with GTA Online Cayo Perico Heist? The answer is no, but still, a distinct lack of content has left players sharpening their hatchets.

The update simply adds some bonuses to the game, and although we've had the likes of last July's Blood Money DLC, it's a far cry from the love and attention GTA Online still gets. With each update, Red Dead Online looks like the black sheep of the family.

Apparently, things are even worse than this. According to some, the RDO team has been slashed to a fraction of its former size, with employees being moved onto other projects. Thankfully, we know the maligned GTA Trilogy was outsourced to Grove Street Games. Still, is this the death knell for GTA Online

What Have Players Said About The Red Dead Online Update?

If you click the hashtag #SaveRedDeadOnline, you'll see the overwhelmingly negative response to the update and the general state of the game in general. Someone wrote, "Please use the hashtag #SaveRedDeadOnline, it’s not much, but maybe it might help to get the message to them that we really want them to do better with the game."

Another ranted, "Just come out and say you’re not supporting the game anymore rather than continue to drag us along with shit like this. Can’t even be bothered to give us weekly updates anymore while giving their golden goose GTAO the entire world at the same time. Y’all are actual clowns."

Despite #SaveRedDeadOnline trending and being a clear call to action, it's unlikely this will actually do anything. Rockstar isn't suddenly going to throw resources at a game that clearly doesn't make as much money GTA Online. Microtransactions make Rockstar a small fortune, but it's rare that we ever hear RDO mentioned in that.

At the end of the day, you have to ask whether you'd rather Red Dead Online or GTA 6, and we're pretty sure we know the answer to that one. Rockstar is known for ignoring this kind of issue and burying its head in sand, so don't expect too much of a quick response to this one. If something isn't done soon, it'll end up like Westworld out there!
