Pray for our sanity, social life, and palms because the new Elden Ring Survival Mode is poised to make the world's hardest game even harder. Making your beefiest build feel like a pants-wearing Wretch tossed out into the Lands Between, you'll find even the most passive Springhare feeling like a battle with the Elden Beast.

By now, we're sure you don't need us to tell you that Elden Ring is hard... like really hard. FromSoftware games are known as gruesome and gruelling endeavours, with the likes of Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice earning the titles as some of the hardest games of all time. Then, along came Elden Ring as Hidetaka Miyazaki's very own best with a billion teeth.

What Is Elden Ring Survival Mode?

Despite Elden Ring being held as hard enough on its own by most, that hasn't stopped modders making it even harder. If you've played Bethesda's Fallout 4, you might remember when a post-launch Survival Mode took away the ability to fast travel, added nerfs like fatigue and illnesses, and even weighted ammunition. You can see where the Elden Ring Survival Mode is going with this one.

Launching today (June 7) Elden Ring: Survival Mode can be found over on Nexus Mods to make your quest across the Lands Between even more perilous. While a lot of Elden Ring mods simply add Shrek or Homer Simpson to the game, this one actually has some merit other than creating a goofy YouTube clip. Much like the handy Sekiro Online modder adding a full-blown co-op to Elden Ring, Survival Mode is one for die-hard FromSofties.

As the work of modder Grimrukh, the Elden Ring Survival Mode mod gives you regional diseases like the Plague of Limgrave that infects hunger and thirst, or Caelid's Scarlet Parasite with overwhelming heat. If that wasn't enough, we're taking a leaf out of Rust's book where everything has to be crafted and weapons can't be bought. Finally, the night is even darker, while even dear Torrent has been nerfed. The clue was in the name.

Will Elden Ring 2 Be Harder Than Elden Ring?

It might be hard to imagine a FromSoft game harder than Elden Ring, as the many hours ploughed into trying to best Margit the Fell Omen will attest to. Still, the developer has backed itself into something of a corner. Miyazaki might've apologised for Elden Ring being too hard, but players are expecting whatever comes next to be even harder.

There's no official announcement of Elden Ring, but with Bandai Namco President and CEO Yasuo Miyakawa already talking about "expanding the brand," there's plenty of scope for where we go next. After all, we've already had three Dark Souls games. Let's hope that Elden Ring isn't another Bloodborne in terms of being one and done. In the many years we'll have to wait for a mythical Elden Ring 2, maybe, just maybe we'll be able to finish Grimrukh's Elden Ring Survival Mode. Don't count on it!
