BluePoint Games is having a pretty good week so far. The developer is known for the Uncharted remakes, Shadow of the Colossus, and crucially, the PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls. Bluepoint has just been acquired by PlayStation after months of leaks and rumours suggested it.

The team is now working on a new game, which is something completely original to break the streak of remakes and remasters. Bluepoint has been welcomed under the PlayStation wing to do so. Even if it comes out a flop, they’ve got something to fall back on.

This is all good news, especially as the sales of the Demon’s Souls remake might not be what you expect.

Demon’s Souls’ Sales Aren’t Massive

After Demon’s Souls practically headlined the PS5’s launch, you’d expect that copies would fly off the shelves, even in spite of it being a Souls game. The current sales total has been revealed as a result of PlayStation’s acquisition of the company and confirmed Demon's Souls sold a total of 1.4 million copies.

It’s a shame that the game has fallen by the wayside, trailing behind its launch cohorts Spider-Man: Miles Morales at 6.5 million copies, and the critically panned Maneater passing one million copies sold in September 2020.

But, it isn’t all doom and gloom. In fact, this is a pretty good number when you consider the context of the game’s release.

Why Demon’s Souls’ Sales Don’t Matter

It can be said that sales don’t determine the quality of any game, but it can be said especially of Demon’s Souls. After all, it is a Souls-like - a type of game that has a very particular and dedicated fanbase - meaning that many PS5 users will know if it’s their kind of game just by looking at the box.

The game is also a remake of an existing title that was only released during the PS3’s life cycle. For many, it was far too soon to rerelease the game - especially at full price on a next-gen console.

But, even with all this considered, 1.4 million sales for a Souls game that came out only a matter of years ago is a great achievement, and a staple of the climb that the franchise has made from its humble beginnings to the synonym of video game difficulty. Don’t worry, Bluepoint - you’re doing great, sweetie.
