We're hearing the "call" from Call of Duty, as Activision's long-running shooter showstopper shows no sign of slowing down. It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, everyone was panning Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. With a renewed interest in the franchise thanks to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, there's also the runaway success of Warzone and the long-awaited sequel to 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops with Black Ops Cold War. Even though we don't officially know what the publisher has planned for Call of Duty 2021, players are already looking ahead to 2022's main entry.

If the latest leaks are to be believed, Infinity Ward could be back in the saddle for a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare. The developer rebooted Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for a new generation and managed to restore our faith in the franchise. With the game still going strong and having a massive presence in Warzone (even if not for much longer), it makes sense that Activision wants to milk the spin-off series a little more.

What's the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 leak?

Some might say we're jumping the gun here, but we argue it's best to be prepared. The idea that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will land in 2022 started doing the rounds thanks to industry insider Tom Henderson. Posting on Twitter, Henderson claimed Infinity Ward is already sketching out plans for a sequel to 2019's juggernaut. After he shared a screenshot of "games we should see in 2022", he clarified that this Modern Warfare 2 would be a sequel to 2019's game and not the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from 2009 (are you keeping up?). Seriously Activision, you need to come up with a better way of naming your game.

More than just posting Modern Warfare 2 alongside Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall 3, Ubisoft's Skull & Bones, and Bethesda's Starfield, the inclusion of the side-eye emoji has raised suspicions. The first three have either been delayed, are in active development, or are long-rumoured. However, Modern Warfare 2 seems like an odd choice to throw into the mix unless there's something more to it.

The end of Modern Warfare left us on a cliffhanger with Task Force 141 and a tease of what's next for Captain Price. If that wasn't enough, Narrative Director Taylor Kurosaki set tongues wagging last year. When one fan said the developers should bring back the fan-favourite Alex, Kurosaki responded, "Who says we won’t?”. Kurosaki also teased that some characters and stories have been saved for the "sequel". It's all a nice little theory, but aside from the hopes of ourselves and Henderson, we need some hard facts.

Will we see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2022?

In terms of a Modern Warfare sequel, we know Infinity Ward has plans to return someday. Kurosaki previously explained (via PC Gamer), "We would love to make another one of these. We have every intention of making another one of these. Have we spent much time thinking about what it could be? A little. We’ve also spent a ton of time just getting to the finish line, so yeah that is intended to get fans of the original trilogy excited and get new fans excited about what that could be". He believed that by "resetting" with Modern Warfare in 2019, it has helped catapult the story forward.

While there are sure to be sceptics out there, Henderson has a proven track record and has previously been right on leaks for Warzone, Modern Warfare, and Black Ops Cold War. Let's also remember that Modern Warfare is far from dead. There's still a loyal fanbase of players holding out hope that John "Soap" McTavish will be coming to Warzone in the near future. With Cold War and Call of Duty 2022 due to have their own time to shine in Warzone, it's easy to imagine a return to the Modern Warfare storyline if the battle royale favourite is still around in 2022.

Despite the fact we've still got that rumoured Call of Duty 2021 to get out the way with Sledgehammer Games, Henderson's rumour is a bit one. At the time of writing, settings for CoD 2021 suggest everything from World War II to a period piece in the 1950s to raise some eyebrows. Even though we'll stick a pin in Modern Warfare 2 for now, it sounds like a moneyspinner to us!
