Battlefield 2042 Reveals New Sandbox Game Creator, Portal
Battlefield 2042's sandbox mode is one that's been kept tightly under wraps. The game's official website, regarded only as [REDACTED] for the time being attracted a lot of attention, and stoked a lot of chatter.
The game mode had a few minor leaks that suggested its content, but now we have our first proper look at the game mode. And it looks like a delicious cocktail of Battlefield and Super Mario Maker.
Battlefield 2042's Sandbox Mode, Portal, Is Revealed
After a lot of speculation as to what the [REDACTED] mode on the Battlefield 2042 website would be, we finally have confirmation courtesy of GameRant.
The mode is titled Battlefield Portal, and is a sandbox mode that allows players to build and create their own game modes using content from a myriad of historic Battlefield titles. You'll be able to mix and match content from different games together to build your own maps and game modes, using an extensive rules editor that will help you to perfect your own games.
The mode is a part of the push to bring back a community to first-person shooters, and is set to make custom lobbies a whole lot more interesting.
Click to enlargeAs part of the new way to play, there are a few modes to come with the Portal - the first of which being Official Experiences, a series of custom game modes built by DICE. The second is Community Experiences, which are a series of maps created by the fans of Battlefield and hand-picked by DICE, and the third is the builder that will allow you to create your own games.
Plus, the mode uses the live service model, which means it's very likely we'll see some more content come to the game mode post-launch.
When your games are made, you'll be given the option to give it a title, description and a password if you so choose, so your games can be for your mates and your mates only.
What Games Does Battlefield Portal Take Content From?
Click to enlargeIt was known that the content available would draw from other Battlefield games for a spot of mismatched chaos, but now we know that along with a myriad of items, weapons and vehicles come six classic maps from old games.
Battle of the Bulge and El Alamein from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2's Valparaiso and Arica Harbor, and Battlefield 3's Caspian Border and Noshahr Canals are all coming to the mode, souped up for next-gen hardware.
Plus, even though the Rush game mode is missing from multiplayer, it makes its way to Portal as a preset along with other fan-favourite modes.
The mode seems completely mad in the best way, and we can't wait to get our hands on it. Remember those game modes you'd invent in the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops with your pals? They're back in Portal, and they're back in full force.
