Well, Battlefield 2042 stacked it, eh? The game was heralded as what could be the defining shooter of the console generation, but instead of soaring, DICE's next big thing buckled under the weight of its promise and flopped to the floor like an exhausted fish that leapt too far onto the riverbank.

Even long-time Battlefield fans and defenders were appalled by what lay before them - broken lobbies, an absence of crucial features and enough bugs to consider the game dead on arrival. It even reached a level of fury that brought about a petition made by fans wanting their money back. Less than a year after work, the AAA title has all but vanished.

Battlefield 2042 Is Adding Its Own Currency

The party is over, but EA is attempting CPR. And now, it's making things worse. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse… According to a new leak by data miner Temporyal, it looks like Battlefield 2042 is set to introduce a fresh set of microtransactions so that players can buy new cosmetics. Brilliant.

The data mine points towards bundles, cosmetics for soldiers, weapons, vehicles, and also some XP boosts. Some premium currency packages have also been discovered, so it looks like the game will be adopting a shop system akin to that of Call of Duty and Fortnite.

It's clear that EA is trying to save a sinking ship, but let's be completely candid for a moment - this is not going to fix Battlefield 2042. At a time when even old Battlefield games from back in the day are more popular than 2042 on Twitch, how did anyone think microtransactions would fix one of the biggest gaming blunders in living memory?

What Is EA Thinking?

This is such a bizarre step for EA to take to try to win players back to Battlefield 2042, especially with its history of wedging more ways to earn money from players into games that don't exactly welcome them. If anything, this move is only going to scare players away even more, and with the game in its current state, it could genuinely cost the series the only players it has left.

It's a daft idea that can't possibly play in EA's favour, even if it earns a few more quid in the process. Battlefield 2042 could be truly finished this time, even despite rumours of the game going free-to-play. The franchise could be done for with this, and frankly, even long-term fans are struggling to feel sad about it. Rest in peace Battlefield - you kinda had it coming.
