Sonic Frontiers: Release Date, Gameplay, Trailers, And More
One of the more surprising reveals of The Game Awards 2021 was Sonic Frontiers, a new open-world Sonic adventure. The night was full of cool moments, but a Zelda: Breath of the Wild-inspired Sonic game was one of the more interesting ones. For those of you intrigued by the newest outing from gamings most iconic speedster, here's all the information on the Sonic Frontiers release date, trailers, gameplay, and more.
Sonic Frontiers Release Date
Sonic Frontiers was given a November 8 release date during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022, where we got a look at the new trailer and some pre-order bonus information. There were many rumours of it seeing a delay into 2023 due to negative reception to some previous trailers, but SEGA seem to be dead set on launching it later this year.
Sonic Frontiers Trailers
The only trailer we've been shown so far for Sonic Frontiers seems to combine both CGI and gameplay. It begins with a cinematic of Sonic dashing through the forest, trying to outrun a giant storm of dust and some pink-tinged machines, before reaching a cliff and gazing back. After this is cuts into what seems to be shots of the real in-game world, as it displays various scenes of forests, mountains, ancient architecture, and more.
We get another cinematic before and after the title card, that shows a giant machine of sorts trying to fight Sonic and the titular character scowling back at it for daring to try and crush him. Overall, it gives us a good teaser toward the type of enemy Sonic will be facing and the world we'll get to explore.
Sonic Frontiers Gameplay And Story
With the announcement of Sonic Frontiers, we got quite a bit of information about the upcoming game, and it paints a picture for an exciting new take on the franchise. Firstly, the biggest news is that the game will be in an open-world, taking place on the Starfall Islands, with different biomes and environments to explore.
It seems to be taking some cues from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with this decision, and the designers have reportedly done it to set the blueprint that the Sonic series will follow for the next ten years.
The premise is that Sonic's old nemesis, Doctor Eggman, has attempted to control the technology found on Starfall Island and something has gone wrong, causing Sonic to have to rescue his friends and stop the awakened forces.
Given the open-world that the game will possess, this may mean you can tackle objectives in different orders, such as saving your friends. We're also intrigued by the size of this world, as it will need to accommodate the rapid nature of Sonic game, plus the scale of the enemy in the trailer is reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus.
Sonic Frontiers Platforms
Sonic Frontiers will have quite a wide release, with the game coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and select PC storefronts.
