The Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith 2.0 is a revamped version of the Gunsmith available in all the present-day Call of Duty titles. Gunsmith 2.0 allows Call of Duty players to customise their weapons like never before — without the tedious grind. With that said, let's review how the new and improved Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith 2.0 works.

  • The Gunsmith isn't the only thing receiving a rework in Modern Warfare 2. Learn all about the MW2 mini-map changes

Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith 2.0: Weapons Platform

The primary difference between the classic Call of Duty Gunsmith and Modern Warfare 2's Gunsmith 2.0 is the addition of Weapons Platforms. A Weapons Platform is a collection of up to five weapons that share the same pool of attachments. Instead of needing to level up and unlock attachments and camos on each and every weapon, Weapons Platforms are a way to streamline progression and customisation, plus allow players to swap between various playstyles with ease.

When using MW2's Gunsmith 2.0 on a weapon that is a part of a larger Weapons Platform, you can alter that weapon's class by swapping its Receiver. Receivers effectively make weapons in a particular Weapons Platform into new weapons. For example, the M4 Platform has four Receivers: the M16, the 556 Icarus LMG, the FTac Racon Battle Rifle, and FSS Hurricane SMG.

Attachments in Gunsmith 2.0 are divided into two categories: Weapons Platform Specific Attachments and Universal Attachments. Weapons Platform Specific Attachments are sharable within Weapons Platforms across all Receivers. For example, if you unlock a Barrel for the M4, you'll be able to use that same Barrel attachment on the M16, the 556 Icarus LMG, and the rest of the M4 Platform Receivers without the need to re-unlock it again. Different Weapons Platforms contain their own unique Weapons Platform Specific Attachments.

Universal Attachments are usable across all eligible weapons. Once you unlock a Universal Attachment, you can use it on any weapon in Modern Warfare 2.

Below is a list of the Weapons Platform Specific Attachments and Universal Attachments:

Weapons Platform Specific Attachments

  • Receiver
  • Barrel
  • Magazine
  • Stock
  • Rear Grip

Universal Attachments

  • Muzzle
  • Underbarrel
  • Ammunition
  • Laser
  • Optic

In Gunsmith 2.0, Modifications indicate how many attachments are currently equipped to that particular weapon. Generally, weapons have five attachment slots, but occasionally a weapon will have fewer or more than five. Receivers do not count as an attachment.

Weapon Vaults

Weapon Vaults are an evolution of Weapon Blueprints. While Blueprints offer unique aesthetic alternatives to specific weapons and attachments in the Call of Duty arsenal, Weapon Vaults account for an entire Weapons Platform and all its attachments.

Customisation

Aside from the makeovers a Weapon Vault can provide, the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith 2.0 allows you to tack on the following to your weapons:

  • Charm
  • Sticker
  • Reticle
  • Camouflage

Coming from the traditional Call of Duty Gunsmith, Gunsmith 2.0 can be a bit intimidating. But, once you get used to it, you'll find that Modern Warfare 2's Gunsmith 2.0 is an all-around improvement on how you personalise and craft weapons in Call of Duty.

Wondering will COD Points and cosmetics transfer to MW2 and Warzone 2?
