Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second part of (what we now know is) a trilogy, that seeks to remake the beloved classic JRPG, Final Fantasy 7. FF7 was released back in 1997 and became an instant critical and commercial hit, with many considering it to be the apex of the Final Fantasy franchise and even the JRPG genre. After the release of the FF7 Remake in 2020, fans have been awaiting news of the follow-up, and after the FF7 25th anniversary celebration, they finally got just that. So read on for our breakdown of everything we know about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, including the release date, trailers, gameplay, and more.

Is There A Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Release Date?

There is no set release date for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth yet, but Square Enix did confirm that they are currently aiming for a winter 2023 release. That still leaves a long wait of over a year until players can finally get their hands on the second part of the trilogy, but we will update this guide once we get news of a concrete date.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Trailers

We received the first trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at the FF7 25th anniversary celebration during June 2022. The trailer begins with Cloud and Sephiroth walking through a rural region, before cutting to Cloud and Zack (from the Crisis Core prequel) in each other's arms, looking worse for wear after an encounter of some sorts.

Players from the original may recognise the area from the trailer - although it looks considerably prettier than it was in 1997 - but it looks like the developers are continuing to reimagine the story and its order of events, like with Remake

The gameplay for FF7 Remake was drastically altered in a few ways from the original, and it's likely that Rebirth will continue with the same gameplay systems and mechanics. While exploration is still the same, the combat changed quite a bit by utilising a real-time system instead of the original's turn-based one. They still included elements of this with the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, which was altered from the original by gradually filling up over time, allowing players to halt the action and use special abilities after some time.

You can also switch between different characters during combat, so with Rebirth - where more characters are likely to be introduced - we're likely to get more fighting styles and unique moves to take advantage of. With the increased size of the world and expanded story and plotlines, Rebirth should have a lot of new content to satisfy players along with all the updated elements from the original.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Platforms

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently only announced for the PlayStation 5. An enhanced version of FF7 Remake was released for PC a year after the initial debut on PlayStation 4, so it's likely that Rebirth will see the same treatment sometime after.
