As a mostly straightforward remaster, the gameplay and story will remain essentially the same throughout. The original game was more of an action role-playing game than FF7 and the other FF games, featuring fully real-time combat that ramped up the pace significantly. There were also a series of open areas that Zack would progress through over the course of the game, allowing you to speak to different NPCs, interact with the environment, and take part in combat. There were also side missions that could be opted into when arriving at save points.

The game is a prequel story to FF7, and directly leads up to the events of the game. It follows a character called Zack Fair who is a SOLDIER for Shinra megacorporation, and his assignment to find the missing character Genesis Rhapsodos. Over the course of the game he uncovers a mystery relating to Shinra and called project G and links it to high-ranking SOLDIERs like Sephiroth.
