The legendary Diablo franchise is set to return with the fourth entry, but what do we know so far about Diablo 4? The next game in the action RPG series was announced at the 2019 BlizzCon, and since then we've had small bits of information here and there expanding on the game. We're now closer than ever to launch though, as the game received a release window at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase for 2022 and its first gameplay showcase. So read on for all the information we have for Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Release Date

We now have a definitive release date for Diablo 4, which is set to launch on June 6, 2023. You can also get early access four days early on June 2 with the game's Ultimate Edition. It was shown at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase in June 2022, and all the games from the showcase were confirmed to be released within the next 12 months, so it just made the cut.

Diablo 4 Trailers

Back when the game was revealed in 2019, it received a cinematic trailer that set the dark and hellish tone, while also teasing fans with the game's main villain, who we know as Lilith from Diablo 2

We also got a gameplay trailer back in 2019 that showed off some beautiful scenery, marking it as the best looking Diablo so far. It looked typically Diablo, with tonnes of enemies that were blown into chunks of viscera from the three classes that were revealed back then. A surprise from the trailer was some horse gameplay, but as we know the game will now be open world, this makes sense for the purpose of travelling around.

Most recently, we got more news about the gameplay systems in a developer gameplay trailer. It covered a lot of stuff, but some of the most important news was about the detailed character creation system, a fully open-world (which is a first for the series), crossplay, and how the end-game functions.

Diablo 4 Story

In this fourth installment, the Eternal Conflict between the forces of High Heavens and Burning Hells is still not resolved. With different actors of the conflict growing bored with this ever-lasting push and pull, some of them have decided to play their own game.

Judging by the announcement trailer, the story of Diablo 4 will revolve around the summoning of Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, which you may remember as the end boss of Diablo 2’s Act 3. As the queen of the Succubi, she’s the mother of the first nephalem, the forebears of humanity and the “lovechild” of Lilith and the rogue angel Inarius who she turns to her side after initially kidnapping him.

With the nephalem posing a serious threat to the two forces, plans for their extinction are formed which Lilith isn’t pleased with. Spinning into a frenzy and leaving a carnage among Inarius’ disciples behind, he banishes her into the Void, a place she can not escape from by herself. Through the generations, the nephalem appear to lose their powers as they eventually land in a state of powerlessness which we call humanity. Caught in the battle between the fronts, Lilith plots her next moves.

Diablo 4 Gameplay

For those unfamiliar with Diablo, it's the grandfather of the isometric ARPG, with the original games setting the gameplay standard of the genre with its legions of enemies, tonnes of loot, dark horror tone, and blood... lots of blood. While the general gameplay loop still looks the same as it did in Diablo 2 all those years ago, the evolution of technology and game design has allowed it to look and feel better than ever, with more punchy animations, life-like graphics, and tonnes of effects which amplify the combat.

There will be five classes for players to choose at launch: the Barbarian, Sorceress, Rogue, Druid, and Necromancer. Each one will have their own distinct abilities and skill trees to let you customise them to your liking, and of course you will be able to upgrade them with the increasingly more powerful loot you'll find over the game. The developers have also boasted that Diablo 4 will feature a whopping 140 dungeons, so throughout the main story and end-game you will have plenty of dungeon delving to do.

Diablo 4 Platforms

Much like the three other Diablo titles, Diablo 4 will be releasing on consoles too, with an officially confirmed release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
