Our hopes of more Zelda remakes haven't quite "sunk" yet, as one Nintendo insider continues to claim a next-gen The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker could be on the way before the end of the year. 2021 is massive for Hyrule and its sprawling timeline, with this year marking 35 years since The Legend of Zelda first hit the Famicom Disk System.

Alongside confirmation that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is on the way (albeit not until 2021), there's been an announcement for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD for the Switch. Given Skyward Sword's divisive place in the rankings of the best Zelda games, players have held out hope that more classic titles could be on the way with a fresh lick of paint.

What's the Wind Waker remake rumour?

We'd like to point out this isn't the first we've heard of a Wind Waker remake, and much like how Nintendo bundled Super Mario 64Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy together for Super Mario 3D All-Star's limited-time release last year, we've been keeping our eyes open for a Zelda Classics Collection. In terms of what would be included, you've got obvious fan-favourites like Ocarina of TimeMajora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess.

Earlier this year, VGC's Andy Robinson assured fans that remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are 100% coming this year. Offering an update, he replied to his own tweet and claimed this is still the case. Before the comments section exploded, Robinson said trying to predict dates is a "fool's game". Although he said he was wrong to use 100% in the original tweet, he asked Zelda fans to "sit tight".

Is there still hope for a Wind Waker remake?

While the update isn't exactly Ocarina music to our ears, at least the insider hasn't completely debunked a Wind Waker remake in 2021. Still, considering the fact we've just had E3 and a massive Nintendo showcase, we're rightly asking when is the right time. It makes sense that Nintendo would want to round off E3 with an update for Breath of the Wild 2, but would it really have been that hard to squeeze in a Wind Waker and Twilight Princess remake instead of a lame Zelda Game & Watch?

Robinson has a pretty solid track record and was one of the first to hype 3D-All Stars before it was officially revealed. Returning to Zelda and Nintendo's seemingly off timing, he said it would be odd for the developer to announce two more next-gen remakes when Skyward Sword HD is yet to release. This means a post-July 16 reveal could be on the cards.

Yes, we know there was a HD Wind Waker remake for the Wii U in 2013, but for many, that's not enough. Taking a leaf out of Capcom's book with how it's headed back through the Resiverse for Resident Evil remakes, the possibility of bringing classic Zelda games to the Switch is sure to be a tempting one. Even if a Zelda 3D-All Stars seems off the cards, Ganon could be holding a Wind Waker remake hostage for a little longer.
