Take-Two Confirms Whether GTA 6 Leak Will Affect The Game
The most recent leak for the hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 will likely go down in history as one of the most significant the gaming industry has ever seen. This leak - supposedly pioneered by a teenager from the UK - revealed a wealth of details about the AAA title that could well be the biggest seller that the medium has ever seen.
The supersized GTA 6 leak exposed the game on a level that Rockstar never saw coming. It's proof that not even the most airtight companies are safe from such dramatic leaks. Fans have been concerned that the leak means the game's development, which is still many years away, would be stunted. And now, Take-Two has come forward to give us an answer to the question.
Will The GTA 6 Leak Hold Up Development?
Click to enlargeYesterday saw a lot of earnings calls across the gaming industry, with Take-Two stepping up to the plate too - and it revealed the impact that the giant leak had on the game's development. Luckily, it's not sounding like much has changed since Rockstar's statement that indicated that it didn't expect any long-term problems with development on Grand Theft Auto 6 as a result.
"With regards to the leak, it was terribly unfortunate, and we take those sorts of incidents very seriously indeed," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. "There’s no evidence that any material assets were taken, which is a good thing, and certainly the leak won't have any influence on development or anything of the sort."
Horray, so it sounds like GTA 6 is still on track for its mythical release date (whenever that is). Let's also remember a lot of the stuff about a female protagonist and return to Vice City had been leaked long ago. Still, Zelnick isn't impressed by it all. He concluded, "It is terribly disappointing and causes us to be ever more vigilant on matters relating to cybersecurity."
What's Happened To The GTA Hacker?
We haven't had any updates over the last month about what is happening to the hacker arrested under suspicion of committing the leak, but the last we heard of it, he pleaded not guilty to the ruling. As reported by Bloomberg, the 17-year-old was, charged with two counts of breach of bail conditions and misuse of a computer too, with the prosecution alleging that he was hacking major companies and "holding them to ransom."
Word to the wise, maybe don't try to ransom one of the world's biggest developers with one of the world's biggest publishers behind it. The hack was a massive deal, but thankfully, it looks like GTA 6's development hasn't slowed just yet. With it being nine years and counting since GTA V, we'd have been waiting long enough as it is.
