Remember when we thought Modern Warfare 2 was going to be the first Call of Duty game to enjoy a two-year life cycle? It's an exciting prospect for fans of the franchise at large - giving extra development time for the other Call of Duty teams to make their games perfect.

It would finally feel as though the various studios aren't part of the same conveyor belt. But, it looks like there are interesting plans for the interim - and it seems as though Modern Warfare 2 won't be the only Call of Duty to focus on.

Call Of Duty Has A New 'Premium' Title Coming In 2023

Last night saw the third quarter earnings report for Activision, and in a surprise turn for those expecting a new Call of Duty title in 2024, it was revealed that a new "premium release" is coming for the series next year.

We don't have any details about this mysterious Call of Duty 2023 game, but the fact that a new entry could be coming at all is a shock. "Following a three-year period in which Call of Duty reached well over half a billion players and delivered a step change increase in engagement and player investment, these launches mark the start of a new era intended to take the franchise to new heights," says the report from the conference.

"Activision is looking forward to building on its current momentum in 2023, with plans for next year including the most robust Call of Duty live operations to date, the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series, and even more engaging free-to-play experiences across platforms." While we start dreaming up a full-blown Ghost spin-off, some people aren't so sure that this means what we think it means.

Fans Are "Falling For The Same PR Language"

In an exchange between Bloomberg's Jason Schreier and CharlieINTEL on Twitter, it has been claimed that this new "premium release" isn't actually a game, but just some sort of content to milk the cash cow. Remember, we've heard a lot about a potential "Greatest Hits" DLC to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

"Man lol you keep falling for the same PR language," says Schreier responding to the news reported by CharlieINTEL. "It's a continuation of Modern Warfare II. It's called a full premium release because they're probably going to market and sell it as a $70 game with new single- and multiplayer content. But it's more MWII." Either way, charging full whack for what's effectively a DLC is sure to lead to some angry placards.

It's certainly a curious strategy for Call of Duty, and though this is to be taken with a pinch of salt, it's going to be interesting to see how the series' future pans out from here. Could it really be time for the sequel to the sequel to the reboot of Modern Warfare? Try not to get confused along the way.
