It's no secret that, in its current state, the world of Call of Duty is on its deathbed. Despite a self-revive kit in the back pocket with a two-year stint of Modern Warfare II in store before Microsoft take the reins completely, the current combination of a stale Warzone and a discarded Vanguard is forcing players away from the franchise.

To nobody's surprise, the player base across the Call of Duty franchise has been poleaxed, with 50 million players leaving.

However, all the responsibility is on Warzone, according to Call of Duty's king Seth "Scump" Abner. The World Series of Warzone winner and CDL monarch has pointed the finger at the battle royale, blaming the lack of a ranked playlist. He says this has led to players searching for fuel for their competitive fire elsewhere.

Scump Blames Warzone For Call of Duty's Player Loss

Having longed for a competitive ranked playlist in Call of Duty: Vanguard, Scump has turned his attention to Warzone's lack of such a mode as the reason players are now looking towards Apex Legends, Fortnite, and VALORANT instead.

Having been quizzed on the reasons behind Call of Duty's absent player count, Scump defended the current multiplayer experience. "Vanguard did not contribute to the 50-million player loss, I'm just going to be honest with you. It might have been 500K people that don't play Vanguard. That's all on Warzone," said Scump in a recent OpTic podcast.

"Ranked games are… that’s it. That’s what people want to play," Scump said. "Ranked equals longevity of just desire to play. Because you want to stay in the top rank and if you’re in the top rank, you get to play against streamers in the top rank. Then you’re getting your name out there."

The Call of Duty developers has openly confessed to having dropped the ball with Caldera and the current Warzone state, already confirming a sequel is landing in the not-so-far-away future.

With hope, Warzone 2 will arrive with a mode that complements the competitive nature and feeds the hungry attitude of the community, rather than allowing players to burn the same effort into public matches and Iron Trials only to have zero rewards.
