Up there alongside Mannfield (Night) and Champions Field, Neo Tokyo has become a beloved arena for Rocket League fans, having a solid blend of authenticity to its design and an aesthetically pleasing colour palette. With many other maps coming into the rotation that overdo it on the 'neon' front - case in point the Season 2's Neon Fields beatbox vibe - Neo Tokyo has just the right amount of bright lights that don't distract you from making the perfect connection to your Athena flicks.

Widely regarded as the best arena in Rocket League, Neo Tokyo has moved on from its poorly designed ramp days to win over the hearts of the player base, so it's no surprise that Psyonix wanted to recapture its glory in a new way. However, their Season 6 efforts in making a "brand-new" map have not been as well-received as the developers may have hoped, as fans and players alike have ripped into this "ugly" re-skin of the famous Neo Tokyo.

The Rocket League Season 6 theme has taken a sprinkle of Epic Games' influence, adding a complete range of animated cosmetics to the Rocket Pass alongside a swanky van to rival the Merc and a "never-before-seen" arena - Psyonix's word, not ours.

Combining with the re-arrival of another Batmobile, Rocket League have gone animated for Season 6, and have now added a re-skinned version of Neo Tokyo to the game - not as a replacement to the original, but as an addition. Having uploaded the map to Free Play a day before the new season goes live, fans have managed to give it a whirl, and have hated it.

Ex-Pittsburgh Knights professional turned content creator, Austin "AlphaKep" Kepner, took to social media to say, "Who in the f*ck made this new Rocket League map. What is going on?", clearly showing a dislike for the arena.

The major criticism of the design comes in its "lazy" floor re-skin, in which the gravel has been smoothed over with a cartoon-ish paint, and the brightness has been whacked up to full. Another member of the Rocket League community said: "A new map variant to just change the floor design? Also it's bright, so another ugly map. Unfortunate."

With an urge for a new grass map increasingly growing in the community, and the last few designs being discarded by the professional scene, some fans are now pleading with the developers for the "new" arenas to be beta-tested before being released.

Typically, players prefer the darker maps, unless your name is Justin "Jstn." Morales, whose placebo effect on Neo Tokyo is well documented.

Rocket League Season 6 will be launching on March 9, where you will be able to try out the Neo Tokyo Animated variant before your eyes melt away and you revert back to the OG.
