PS5 Expected To Dwarf Xbox Series Sales In 2022

The gauntlet (and controllers) have been thrown down, as Microsoft and Sony draw their battle lines and prepare to duke it out like never before. Although Xbox seems it might have PlayStation licked thanks to that big Activision Blizzard deal, Sony is due to sell a tonne of PS5s in 2022.

Some might think PlayStation has lost the battle, but that doesn't mean nabbing a PS5 is still the top of people's to-do list. Since late 2020, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have flown off shelves quicker than Microsoft and Sony have been able to produce them. These issues continue into this year, but in terms of sales, the PS5 is expected to best the Xbox Series.

How Many PS5s Will Be Sold In 2022?

A report from Ampere Analysis claims that the PS5 will outsell the Xbox Series 2:1 in 2022. Despite both sides struggling to keep their new-gen consoles in stock, business should tick along nicely this year. The Xbox Series is tipped to sell a middling 9 million, but this is nothing compared to the PS5's potential 18 million sales.

As well as all of the above being cautious estimates, it's interesting that the Switch is yet again looking like the King of the console castle. Since its release in 2017, the Switch has continued to dominate the charts. Although the PS4 was the best-selling console of 2018, the Switch has taken the crown in 2019, 2020, 2021, and possibly 2022. Not bad considering the Switch Pro/Switch 2 turned out to be a bust.

What's Next For The Big Three?

It's truly amazing to think the Switch will come out on top again in 2022. We know there was the release of the Switch OLED last year, but it didn't exactly make a tonne of noise. Then again, there's a bumper crop of software that's sure to bolster Switch sales this year.

Alongside the imminent release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, there's Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. If that wasn't enough, the expanded Switch Online library is churning out classic N64 games.

Elsewhere, subscription services are apparently going to grow 27% across North America and Europe - further proving that Microsoft is on the money with Game Pass. With reports of a PlayStation equivalent, the wounded gaming giant is down but not out. We always knew console sales would be strong this year, but still, it's nice to put a figure to the facts.
