The new era of Call of Duty was kicked off by Modern Warfare 2's arrival, spinning the franchise into unchartered territory as the developers look to rebuild from the ground up. But not everyone is happy.

It's no secret that Activision has enjoyed plundering the pockets of its fans on a bi-monthly basis, with the game launches being followed by seasonal content refreshes and battle passes.

This attitude has now seeped into the game's DNA, and long-time Call of Duty players are fed up with the franchise tailoring each game towards money-making updates. Some have branded it "not a video game" anymore.

Long-Time CoD Fan Slams MW2

Fans of MW2 have found that this year's title is specifically designed to keep you coming back by hindering the ability to unlock better weapons and attachments.

The convoluted gunsmith options are just one way that Infinity Ward has pushed MW2 towards a grind simulation rather than an arcade shooter, and content creator Tyler "WILDCAT" Wine has had enough.

The popular streamer took to Twitter to claim that, "MW2 is not a video game, it's an algorithm." Combined with Activision's clear intention to roll out weapon blueprints in bundles, he added that MW2 is "designed to capture as much human attention as possible and convert it into dollars."

Is MW2 Just An Algorithm?

Given that Modern Warfare 2 makes you grind through four separate guns and attachments just to unlock one sniper sight - which will no doubt be released in the store come Season 1 - the algorithmic feel to MW2 is evident.

Popular content creator Jake Lucky also agreed. The Full Squad Gaming presenter said, "Part of it for me has just been growing up, my passion for the same commercial CoD has fallen through the floor."

Other fans pointed out that the developers have clearly held back a lot of content to keep you engaged, which should be fundamentals of the game instead of soon-to-arrive bonuses.

Not everyone agreed though, claiming nobody is forcing you to buy bundles and appease the "cash grab." Still, it's clear to see that microtransactions will prevail in MW2 once again.
