As the wide world of video game adaptations expands at an exponential rate, you might've forgotten Amazon is supposed to be working on a live-action Fallout. But seriously though, how could we have forgotten Amazon is working on a live-action Fallout series?

Since 1997, Fallout has explored the apocalyptic wasteland of an alternate timeline where the Earth was ravaged by Nuclear war after the 1950s. It's one of the most successful RPGs around, and given the success of shows like The 100, seems prime for the TV treatment. Now, the long-awaited Fallout series has landed some major talent behind the camera

What's Going On With The Fallout Series?

According to Deadline, the Fallout series will be going into production later this year. More than this, the pilot has apparently secured Jonathan Nolan to direct. For those who don't know, Nolan is the co-creator of Westworld and famously worked alongside wife Lisa Joy as showrunner. His credits also include co-writing everything from The Dark Knight to Interstellar

Elsewhere, Captain Marvel's Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Silicon Valley's Graham Wagner will serve as joint showrunners on Fallout. The site has the following to say about the Fallout series - teasing it will be a faithful adaptation of the game's IP: "The world of Fallout is one where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077.

"The magic of the Fallout world is the harshness of the wasteland set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy. It is serious and harsh in tone, yet sprinkled with moments of ironic humor."

Despite criticisms that it lost steam in Season 3, let's remember the first season of Westworld was one of the best in living memory. From the whole aesthetic of Westworld to its twists and turns, the fact Nolan has joined Fallout gives us hope this won't be another cheap knock-off.

Now that things are moving forward with the pilot, it's surely only a matter of time before Fallout starts casting its movers and shakers. The joy of the games is that there's rarely been a main protagonist. Players have been free to customise their character, while the world of the Wasteland has come to life through NPCs. Here's hoping Harold the humanoid tree gets his time to shine.

Given that Westworld landed talent including Thandiwe Newton, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, and Sir Anthony Hopkins, we're excited to see where Amazon goes with this one. It's set to be a massive year for the streaming service, with a live-action Lord of the Rings series also on the way. If that wasn't enough, Henry Cavill has stoked the fires of a Mass Effect series

As for the Fallout games, we have no idea what's next. Microsoft's massive acquisition of ZeniMax Media means Bethesda now falls under this umbrella. We already know The Elder Scrolls 6 will be an Xbox exclusive, but with a packed slate, don't expect Fallout 6 anytime soon. At least there will be plenty of material for Amazon's series to work with.
