While we know Bethesda is working out its plan for Fallout 5, we also know it comes with the grim caveat that it's not going to be out for a long time.

The acclaimed developer has already mapped out a busy schedule that will see focus shift to The Elder Scrolls 6 when work is done on Starfield. It's only after that Fallout 5 gets the attention it deserves.

Fallout 4 released in 2015, soared to the top of the charts, and made a tonne of money. Although it had its critics (mainly over visuals and technicals), its selling power means we were always guaranteed Fallout 5.

The question is, where are we heading? Now, one ex-Bethesda dev has pitched their own mythical Fallout game set in New Orleans.

Will Fallout 5 Be Set In New Orleans?

After all these years, fans are expecting something new with Fallout 5. Just like the massive franchise pivot between Fallout 2 and Fallout 3, we're overdue a reinvention.

No, we don't mean like the disastrous endeavours of Fallout 76. Looking back at the franchise's height, the bold step to go somewhere new for Fallout: New Vegas really worked

Speaking to PCGamesN, Bethesda artist Nate Purkeypile pitched New Orleans and said, "Whatever I want to do is probably not what they want to do.

I don't think it will ever go outside of America for the core games personally. So it's a matter of picking the places in America that would be the coolest and niche, I personally would say New Orleans, or Colorado."

Explaining why The Big Easy, Purkeypile continued, "New Orleans always sounded like a really cool one to me." This isn't his only ambition though. For those wondering why we've never been able to drive around the Wasteland, he added, "I've also personally wanted them to get maybe a little wider and bring vehicles in eventually.

"But I don't know if that would ever happen either because it's a very different approach when you’re designing a world with vehicles, the spacing of everything is completely different. Kind of like that Mad Max game."

What Is The Fallout: New Orleans Rumour?

For those thinking Purkeypile simply threw a dart at a map and landed on New Orleans, the idea of Fallout: New Orleans has actually been floated before.

Back in 2016, Bethesda went as far as to trademark the name, which obviously kicked the rumour mill into overdrive. It's not unusual for gaming companies to register trademarks and not use them, but coming so soon after Fallout 4's release, it's kept us guessing for years.

Obsidian has apparently been working on a mysterious Project Louisiana for years, which many thought could be Fallout: New Vegas. We know Obsidian wants to make another Fallout, and looking at the love for New Vegas, there's every chance all of this could come together.

With such a massive wait between mainline titles, we'd like to imagine a world where Bethesda tackles numbered entries and Obsidian works on spin-offs - well, we can dream.
