Fimbulwinter has come to an end and Kratos has put down his Blades of Chaos (for now), but that hasn't stopped Sony Santa Monica from looking ahead to its future.

First stepping out into the scorched lands of Ancient Greece for some good ol' vengeance in 2005, SSM has become synonymous with God of War and delivering one of Sony's biggest first-party franchises.

Although God of War Ragnarok will end our time in the Nine Realms to close the book on Norse mythology, no one is really buying the GoW name is done. Neither is the developer, as it teases what's next.

Is Sony Santa Monica Working On A New God Of War Game?

While some of us aren't even finished with Ragnarok yet, there's no rest for the wicked. Sony Santa Monica's Cory Barlog excitedly teased the studio is working on a new game - although it's not necessarily another God of War

Speaking to The LA Times, Barlog said the team is "spread out on a lot of different things" but stopped short of explaining what they are. Cue side-eye emoji. Ragnarok Game Director Eric Williams then doubled down on the idea of another God of War.

"I remember talking to someone from another game company, where they were trying to get me to leave," added Willaims. "They said, 'Do you just want to be known as the 'God of War' guy for the rest of your life?' That was your big pitch to dissuade me? Because yes, I kind of do."

It's true that Sony Santa Monica has previously assisted on the likes of the Twisted Metal games, Journey, and PixelJunk, but it will always be remembered for God of War. There's also been talk of a cancelled sci-fi game, but we'd be surprised if Kratos' legacy didn't continue.

When Could We See A New God Of War Game?

If we were Barlog or Willaims, we'd be taking a well-earned break following the success of Ragnarok. Straight off the back of 2018's God of War, the team jumped into Ragnarok

Despite coming out in 2022, Ragnarok was originally supposed to launch in 2021 and was famously delayed due to health issues with Kratos actor Christopher Judge. Even four years between games was a quick turnaround, so we imagine there might be a bit of a delay.

We'll have to wait and see what Sony Santa Monica is working on, but by the sounds of it, the team being "spread" sounds like multiple projects. Whatever's next, if it's anything like God of War Ragnarok, we'll be onto a winner.
