It's all change over at Fortnite HQ, as Epic Games' battle royale juggernaut is rolling out the big guns for a (questionably timed) war-themed season. As with every new season of Fortnite, Chapter 3 Season 2 has revamped the map, rolled out a new Battle Pass, and pushed the story of the IO and the Seven forward. While we get to grips with what's new and what was given the boot, not everyone is impressed.

Love it or hate it, building is a major part of Fortnite. Some of us are expert Bob the Builders as we reach for the skies in the final circle and hide inside a towering skyscraper of wood and metal. The rest of us find ourselves throwing our controllers at the screen when we're beaten by a child who has snatched victory from us, simply by hunkering down in their own creation. Well, all of that has changed.

Why Was Building Removed From Fortnite?

Chapter 3 Season 2 is named "Resistance" and makes good on those rumours of tanks that were lurking in the back end. Epic Games has already come under fire for the timing of its season but has promised to try and rectify this by donating all proceeds from March 20 until April 3 to humanitarian relief for Ukraine. On an unrelated note, others are furious that building, the mechanic above all else that separates Fortnite from the battle royale pack, has also been removed from March 20.

To make up for a lack of cover to hide behind, players are now given an Overshield, which acts as a second barrier to stop you from being downed by a hail of bullets. We're only just getting to grips with the latest season, and already, a lack of building has split gamers into two polarising camps.

Over on Twitter, the responses are coming thick and fast. One supporter wrote, "Unpopular Opinion, Removing Building was the Best thing Fortnite has ever done," while another added, "I honestly love Fortnite without building. It feels like a whole new game." A third disagreed and wrote: "I hate season 2, just played a game with my friends, tanks just run you over, shoot at you, AND YOU CANT BUILD. REMOVE TANKS OR BRING BACK THE BUILDING. I loved old Fortnite back in chapter 1, but now Fortnite is a mess, fix your game Epic"

Is Building Coming Back To Fortnite?

For all you sweaty builders out there, fear not, building will be back in Fortnite. It's only for the first nine days of the season that you'll be able to tour the map without feeling like you've walked into a makeshift New York City. It will be interesting to see what happens when building comes back into Chapter 3 Season 2 and whether there's uproar over its return.

We'll admit that building is what sets Fortnite apart from something like Call of Duty: Warzone or Apex Legends, and since its introduction alongside Save the World, it's become synonymous with Fortnite. Even though we'd previously heard about Fortnite no build mode, it was a surprise arrival during the latest season. For the time being, building is limited to Arena playlists, but with its imminent return looming on the horizon, you'd best make the most of a build-free Fortnite while you can.
