Sony Santa Monica is swinging a lightning-charged hammer at the competition in 2022, as God of War Ragnarok is finally making good on the promise that it's coming out this year. Along with all the usual bells and whistles, we have the souped-up Collector's Edition to add to your shelf. Sadly, not everyone is impressed.

As the long-awaited follow-up to 2018's critically acclaimed God of War reboot, the concluding chapter of the Norse mythology gives Kratos and Atreus another trip across Midgard. Collector's Editions are the norm these days, and as previously leaked, the God of War Ragnarok Collector's Edition includes a 1:1 model of Thor's Mjolnir hammer.

Why Don't God Of War Ragnarok Fans Like The Collector's Edition?

God of War Ragnarok is hammering home a November 9 release date. Now, we have the impossible task of picking which edition of the game we want to buy. PlayStation has done an official reveal of the Collector's and Jotnar Editions of Ragnarok with Thor voice actor Ryan Hurst and SSM Art Director Rafael Grassetti - showcasing what's up for grabs.

The Collector's Edition includes two Vanir Twin carvings, a dwarven dice set, and the 1:1 Mjolnir replica. The Jotnar Edition takes it up a notch with a cloth map, 7" vinyl, pin set, and Legendary Draupnir Ring. Both come with a glossy steelbook case, but as the description says, "no game disc included." The idea that we're shelling out a small fortune for a steelbook that doesn't include a disc has rattled fandom.

Even though you obviously get Ragnarok (in the form of a download code), the Twitterverse is suitably raging that these collector's editions don't come with a physical copy of the game, meaning we'll have to buy a base edition of the game to complete the package. One disgruntled gamer wrote, "Okay it's really f*****g weird that the God of War collector's edition come with a steelbook but no actual game disc, but a voucher for downloading the game instead. What the hell kinda choice is that? I'd rather them not include the game at all for less money and let me choose."

Another fumed, "I'm aware it includes a digital copy, but makes the steelbook seem pointless? Just me?," while a third added, "The fact that very expensive and very big God of War collectors edition comes with a steelbook box for the game...but no physical game is absolutely hilarious to me. Put the empty box on your shelf right next to all your physical media."

How Much Does God Of War Ragnarok Cost?

As someone writes, this is a "worrying trend," and you might remember when Horizon Forbidden West pulled a similar trick with its Collector's Edition earlier this year. Surely part of shelling out for a collector's edition is that you want the actual disc to be in your hand? Amidst allegations that physical games are a dying breed, Sony isn't putting our fears to rest.

The question of how much God of War Ragnarok will cost has left us locked out in a snowy Midgard. Sony is on the marketing assault hyping the various editions but is yet to give us an actual price tag. Looking back at Horizon Forbidden West should give us some indication of where it's heading.

Horizon Forbidden West Collector’s Edition cost $199.99/£169.99, while the Regella Edition was a chonky $259.99/£229.99. It was a similar story for the Elden Ring Premium Collector's Edition, so expect Ragnarok to follow suit. All that money and you don't get a disc? We're crunching the numbers and something doesn't seem right with this one!
