The clue was already in the name, but Behaviour Interactive's Dead by Daylight has a lot of death in it. Whether it's running away from Leatherface and his purring chainsaw, refusing to answer the phone to Ghostface, or dodging the Trickster's blades, it usually ends up with you bleeding out on the floor.

Although a lot of the game is taken up by the standard hack and slash as you're stalked around Mount Ormond or the Dead Dawg Saloon, a lot of us tune in for those gruesome Dead by Daylight mori kills. There's nothing like seeing the Demogorgon opening its flaps to chow down on Nancy Wheeler.

What Is The Dead By Daylight Mori Update?

We've already covered DbD's big anniversary - that comes packed with another Resident Evil chapter and an Attack on Titan crossover (because why not?). Away from this, there's a confirmed rework for the mori system. Currently, Killers can pull off their signature move, but only if you've made a sacrifice before the start of the match. Even then, you're not guaranteed a Memento Moris... until now.

In the update, Behaviour confirmed that when a Killer downs the last Survivor, they'll no longer have to hook them to trigger a mori kill. The Finisher Mori is described as, "Rather than drawing things out, having them pick up and hook the Survivor, we'll instead transition immediately and automatically into the Killer's mori animation. Allowing them to close things out in style, like you would expect from an unstoppable killing machine."

Promoting the Dead by Daylight mori update, Design Director Mass S. explained, "A mori is how you’d expect The Killer to finish a well-played match, so it made sense to go in that direction. We’re moving the mori system away from offerings and making it a natural part of the game." A full blog post explains the mori rework is tentatively scheduled for this year.

What Have Players Said About The Dead By Daylight Mori Update?

Although most supported the mori update, not everyone was a fan. One critic said: "I love moris AND letting the last survivor go as a gesture of sportsmanship. I feel like this really misses the point of moris in general and just takes the fun away from the last 1v1 or sign of peace." Another added, "PLEASE make it a prompt instead of automatic, forcing the mori removes any possibility of counterplay or if the killer just wants to be nice and give you hatch...this seems TOO rewarding."

Alongside the various killer DLCs, moris are one of Dead by Daylight's defining features. No matter what Behaviour did, it was always going to be divisive. Still, with the ability to hear The Huntress' calm humming or see Ghostface take a selfie with their victim is DbD at its best. We'll have to wait and see how long this new mori system stays before it's inevitably changed again, but either way, we'll see you in the Fog.
