The spooky season is well and truly upon us, and if you want to sample the slaughter, there's good news that Behaviour Interactive's Dead by Daylight is going free-to-play. Now, you can slice and dice your enemies as Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, or even Albert Wesker... without having to spend a dime.

First launched in 2016, Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric horror where you take on the role of either being a Survivor or Killer. From its humble roots, the game has grown to be an evil presence all of its own, becoming known for its pop culture crossovers from the great and the gross of the horror world. Alongside grand plans to keep the franchise murdering the competition, Behaviour Interactive is trying to lure new players in.

When Is Dead By Daylight Going Free-To-Play?

As confirmed by the developers themselves, Dead by Daylight is getting a free-to-play weekend to honour all things occult. If you want to scream with delight, Dead by Daylight will be free-to-play from October 27 to November 1.

The free-to-play weekend is part of a much bigger event, with the "Haunted by Daylight" celebration running from October 13 to November 3. While the likes of Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone celebrate Halloween on an annual basis, it was always going to be DbD that pulls out the big guns. There are changes across the board, with October 11 starting the party via the Tricks and Treats costume collection alongside the Hallowed Blight collection having a new Albert Wesker outfit.

On October 12, the Thirteenth Tome (Malevolence) will unveil new memories for both Killer Ghost Face and Survivor Mikaela Reid. This Tome involves a local cartoonist who parodies Ghost Face in the local paper. You can earn some exclusive mask variations for the fan-favourite Killer.

What Else Is Coming To Dead By Daylight?

If that wasn't enough to gorge yourselves on in October, a whole new mechanic is being added where Survivors have to find "void energy" and then deposit it in "rifts" to earn prizes. Look out for these glowing orbs, and if you nab them as a Survivor, you'll get an in-game t-shirt that glows. Killers get candy-themed costumes if they do the same.

This spooktacular comes just after news that PUBG has partnered with DbD for its own Halloween collab. These frightening festivities are sure to pull old players back to Behaviour's world, but if you're confused about what a Tome is, now could be a great time to try out Dead by Daylight without splashing out on the full game. We know the various movie-themed DLCs are the big pull, and even though they're not included in the free weekend, why not have a taste? We're sure you'll be hungry for more like a brain-ravenous zombie.
