Expansion in the Call of Duty League is here for its annual debate, but this time, instead of fans hoping and speculating, Call of Duty League General Manager Daniel Tsay has stoked the fire.

The 12-team format of the CDL has long needed to be added upon. With the competitive nature of the league being condensed to host just 28 of the best players in the world, many top-calibre talents have missed out on spots year after year.

Sometimes for a lack of synergy with existing teammates, sometimes for salary reasons, and sometimes because of sheer bad luck, some of the best players have missed out on CDL opportunities, and fans think piling a few more teams into the mix would not only make for a better showing with more great teams but also fix formatting issues. Now, it could finally be in the works.

CDL Expansion Could Be Coming Sooner Rather Than Later

The 2022-23 season is already locked in with the 12 franchises (except London who face rebranding woes) having announced their rosters. However, looking forward to 23-24, Daniel Tsay has now hinted at an expansion finally coming to fruition.

"Right now, we're welcome to entertaining expansion and we do receive interest from outside organizations," Tsay told Dexerto.

"That is the most important thing: making sure we have strategic partners that will help grow the Call of Duty League," Tsay continued.

Which Orgs Could Feature In CDL Expansion?

The first organisation on the fans' list will be Cloud9. Yes, the organisation has a renowned reputation for baiting its fans and wider communities, but the famous white and blue organisation has consistently hinted at a return to CoD. Having been a powerhouse org before the franchised league came along, many have hoped for their return. Just last year, C9 hinted at CDL ventures through their links with Colt "Havok" McLendon.

Rise Nation, an esteemed org within CoD pre-CDL, also recently confessed to wanting back in, if the price was right. Tsay also hinted at a more worldwide approach to the CDL too, despite recent criticism of all-American event calendars. "We want to be in really attractive regions. We just wanted to make sure that we place franchises in the best possible cities," he added.

A 16-team format would be favourable, which means the addition of four organisations coming into play, which could also mean more regions could be added to the CDL as quickly as next year.
