As far as desks go, you've really got a few options. The IKEA-esque classic, the total gamer rig, or the latest and most expensive trend going, the standing desk. The pandemic and its subsequent work-from-home boom brought standing desks to the spotlight, giving some much-needed relief from the monotony of sitting to work for eight hours of your day. Many people flocked to them, and now that they're starting to see the long-term effects of avoiding constant sitting, their novelty hasn't exactly worn off, and despite the fact that working from home isn't quite as common, for those who do, it has become all the more appealing.

There are a lot of standing desks on the market, of incredibly varying price and quality - but Flexispot has swung for the fences with a pro model to contest with the most expensive. And it has made an immeasurable change to the way I work at home.

Construction

Receiving the desk itself was dramatic because it comes in three separate packages, with each of the boxes being immensely heavy. Once every piece had been lugged indoors, the setup of the desk was, for the most part, a less strenuous experience than it initially seemed. Heavy components and difficulties with nails that requiring power tools aside, building the desk took about an hour altogether, and considering all of the moving parts needed for the desk itself, this is pretty fair despite the sweat it took. It was hard work, but it was worth the effort.

The desk's build is strong and barely sees any wobble when in a sitting position. After moving over from a relatively cheap desk from Amazon, it's clear to see the difference it can make when a desk has larger and stronger legs. At the very top of its extension, though, it does shake when met with typing or any other kind of drastic movement - as a six-foot-something person, the desk was stretched pretty far up for me, and it suffered a little on that front. But it never felt as though it was about to tip over or buckle under its own weight, so it didn't really come off as much of a nuisance.

If there's any one frustrating thing about the desk though, it's the distinct lack of cable management options. It's left to you to take care of the nightmare of the cables you need for your desk setup, an irritation that could have been solved by a simple basket on the back of the desk itself. But, it's something that you're going to have to source yourself, and given how ugly the dangling cables are when the desk is at full extension, you're going to want to do it quick.

Performance

By far the leading feature of the Flexispot E7 is its functionality as both a regular desk and its ability to transform into a standing one at a moment's notice. The interface at the bottom of the desk is incredibly easy to use with its sensors, and it comes packed with a function that remembers your height and moves effortlessly to the height you need.

The movement itself is pretty seamless, and despite its hum as it ascends and descends, it does so in such a fluid way that it barely disrupts any cup of tea on the top of the desk. It's incredibly smooth and simple, and is such a painless experience that you'll find yourself transitioning from one mode to another all throughout the day without it causing any trouble whatsoever.

Naturally, it may take some time to see the long-term effects come of a standing desk, like an improved posture or reduced back pain, but in the meantime, it's incredibly refreshing to have the option not to resort to a chair at all hours of the day. The simple act of working on your feet in a field that typically sees you slumped into a chair gives it a little more life, and help to make the experience feel a little less draining.

Verdict

Despite the desk being a fantastic addition to anyone's working build, it's fair to be apprehensive with the huge price tag that comes with it but, when considering the long-term investment made by picking up a standing desk, it's a more than valuable purchase - and one that has drastically changed the way I work from home.

The Flexispot E7 is a perfect example of how standing desks should be, and though there are some minor gripes to be had with the lack of cable management, this is a desk that's bound to last years thanks to outstanding build quality, and bring some variation to your days of working from home.
