The New World AFK timer is proving to be a problem for some players, because being kicked means you'll have to face the wrath of the server queues again. Amazon’s new MMORPG New World has been hit with such a huge influx of players that some are waiting in queues in the thousands to get into New World servers. If you manage to sneak into a server early or wait out the long queues, you’re going to want to hold onto your coveted place, so here’s how the in-game New World AFK timer works and potential ways to beat it.

The timer appears to be 25 minutes in length, with a message popping up on the top-right of the screen to warn you of your impending trip out of the server at 20 minutes of idling. This may seem quite generous as 25 minutes can seem like a long time to be stood still. However, this is an MMO and it doesn’t move at the same pace as shooters for example, which have much shorter AFK timers coming in at under five minutes. In the realm of MMO games though, this may be slightly harsher than some, as both World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV have 30 minute timers and also have had the advantage of working through their teething issues of server numbers and stability. So after 25 minutes of zero input, you’ll be taken back to the main menu and forced to try your luck at the queue once more.

Is there any way around the New World AFK timer?

You can always try the classic trick of forcing down your W key with something heavy to run into the nearest wall (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it am I right?), one of those drinking desk birds would also work if you have one lying around. If you want to test your engineering skill out of the game then you can always try your hand at a Rube Goldberg machine... though it's a little over the top.

Another trick that seems to work is enabling auto run, which is the = key by default, and running into a wall constantly. It would seem like something the developers would account for, but plenty of players have been doing it successfully - though it’s something that could get patched out at some point. No matter which version of the old run-into-the-wall-forever trick you use, just make sure you do so in a settlement or somewhere not inhabited by mobs. Otherwise you’ll risk coming back to a party of foes not so nicely asking you to join their ranks.
