Gran Turismo 7 gives you a variety of stunning tracks to drive across in even more beautiful cars, but sometimes the AI companions can leave a little to be desired when it comes to a true competition. But does Gran Turismo 7 have multiplayer? And if it does, how do you access it? Here's everything you need to know how to play multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7.

After spending a few hours with Gran Turismo 7, you might be a little confused as to when or if multiplayer will even be a part of this latest Sony title. Yet, you'll be pleased to know that Gran Turismo 7 does have a multiplayer mode, although it isn't available to players from the first time they rev up an engine.

Instead, there are certain hallmarks in the game's loose campaign that will need to be met before you can go tyre to tyre with another real driver.

Now that you know that it is there, how do you play multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7? The answer is annoyingly simple yet time consuming. You will need to complete a series of menus through the Gran Turismo Café, which tasks you with completing races and unlocking trios of cars. Once a menu book is completed, you will unlock more races and sometimes even championships before stepping in for the next menu trio.

You'll have to clear 14 menu books before the multiplayer lobby is accessible, however, some of these are one step tasks, with 10 menu books being actual races or championships. Here is a list of all of the menu books you will need to complete before you can play Gran Turismo 7 multiplayer:

  • Japanese Compact Cars
  • Test Yourself At The Licence Centre
  • European Classic Compacts
  • High Speed Ring Track Day
  • Japanese FF Sports Car
  • Tune A Classic Car
  • European Hot Hatches
  • Wash A Car At GT Auto
  • Tokyo Highway Parade
  • Japanese FR Sports Cars
  • French Hot Hatches
  • Petite Course de France
  • Try Your Hand At A Mission
  • Mustang

Once all of these have been completed, which should also leave you with a decent pot of credits and collection of low-end cars, you will unlock both the Multiplayer and Sports centre on the World Map.

Now that you've unlocked the Multiplayer and Sports centres you'll want to know how to play multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7. Your options are split up by the two centres which differ in the type of online experience.

If you are looking for a casual yet fun multiplayer race, then back out to the World Map, and select the Multiplayer centre at the bottom right of the map by the shoreline. This is your basic multiplayer experience. Here you will have the option to select Lobby, where you can create or join custom lobbies to race against strangers or friends.

However, if you are looking for something a little more competitive, then you'll want to head to the Sports centre which is located directly above the Multiplayer centre on the World Map. Here you will be placed into a letter ranking - ranging from E at the lowest all the way to S at its highest. However, your drivers rating is directly linked to your sportsmanship rating, which is increased by avoiding collisions.

If you continue to crash into competitors you cannot improve your driving rating, and will remain in the lower ranked lobbies. The Sports option is essentially ranked play, and will allow you to take part in daily races and championships.

That's how to play multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7. If you want to take part in competitive play a little closer to home, check out our guide on how to play split screen in Gran Turismo 7.
